  1. Wells has had some life on the high heater.
  2. How come Shoppach sudenly looks more jacked and, dare I say, professional than he did with the Sox(Paw)?
  3. Meanwhile here comes Shoppach and Marte... always fun to see old faces (sorry, I missed the first 2 innings).
  4. Seriously, he's about as slow as a man can get. Guinness book anybody?
  5. Because he's a powerhouse. Unfortunately, he's about as fast as my local water dam/power station.
  6. Who cares? I think the point is that even the moves we're arguing about are minor ones. We have the potential to add Wells and Wakefield back to our rotation over the last few months (if wells can stop hanging those breaking balls). One thing about Wells is that he's a fighter, that's for sure and--for whatever reason--he has pride enough to fight till he's done. If he can come back as an effective #3 or #4 and Wake can make it back then we'll have a decent rotation. All season i've been thinking about trades and there were very few spots I wanted to see upgraded. Our defense is still terrific, our pitching suspect (like all teams not named MIN or DET) and our bullpen better than it has been in recent years (even with Delcarmen and Hansen struggling recently. I'm optimistic, though I would likely have wanted to try a few more pitchers if we had the ability to do so.
  7. I think this team needs to be shaken, but in the sense that a drink is shaken: the ingredients remain essentially the same but you mix it up. Something about this offense isn't clicking. I don't know if its the loss of power in the middle or Coco over the past few weeks, but there seems to be some disconnect. I heard the suggestion earlier of letting Coco hit 2nd, where he's performed well in the past. If Loretta moves (say, for Lugo) then the lineup gets added speed at the bottom. Youkilis Crisp Ortiz Ramirez Nixon Varitek Lowell Lugo Gonzo Doing that and adding a 3 or 4 pitcher and taking a crack at one or two more relievers would be the type of shake up this team needs. Not much more than that. Its just a chemistry thing; occasionally they are a very low-energy team that lacks a spark.
  8. There is no way that Oswalt is available, is there? He's too good to give up on and I think he's a huge reason that Houston has been successful the past few years. Clemens at this point for very little talent would be a great deal. I doubt it is happening, but its a good idea.
  9. His name is Pedroia. That is who would be our #2 hitter. If not him them move Coco back to leadoff and have Youk hit 2nd. There are options and its not the end of the world. How about a 2nd starter who happens to be in the 3rd or 4th spot on a team that has two #1 caliber pitchers and a legitimate #3 rookie who could be a great #4 in the playoffs. Pedroia is a tremendous defensive player. He has a great eye. I think of him (perhaps erroroneously) as a 2B version of Youkilis. I would much rather have two Youkilii in a row than a Youkilis-Loretta (even though I love loretta's game as much as anyone).
  10. Pedroia could be BETTER than Loretta. Having watched what I've watched of Howie Kendrick, I would put his bat in the lineup right now over loretta... especially if Loretta is trade worthy for a #3 arm or, packaged with prospects, something better. I say Kendrick because I think Pedroia and Kendrick are both highly touted 2Bmen, although both have very different styles. If we get too attached to guys like Loretta (to the point of getting angry if they are traded) then its going to be a tough retooling period. The plan was to find some stop-gap players until our minor leaguers are ready. Pedroia is ready, let's use Loretta while he's still playing well.
  11. TO me this is no different than someone waking me up this morning and saying "example1, Gary Sheffield has returned to the lineup and will be in the OF starting tuesday". Yes, he is worthy of respect with runners on base. So are most of the rest of the Yankees. Matsui? Yep. Jeter? yep. A-Rod? yep. Giamboid? yep. Posada? yep. Sheffield? yep. I will keep telling myself this isn't that big a deal. And, in 3 weeks when everyone is saying "looks like that abreu deal wasn't the be all and end all to determine who wins the AL" I will say " that's what I thought, beiatches!"
  12. So the Yanks pay 4 million for this year, and 15 million for next year of Abreu? That's not a great deal, if you ask me. Its like paying market value for Abreu, as if he were a free agent or something. Nothing to fear boys.
  13. According to people on another board, WEEI has reported that Loretta is out of the lineup for tonight. Anyone know if this was planned? We should move Loretta for pitching, not for another IFer. I want Pedroia to get his shot and we have cora behind him if need be.
  14. who f'in knows anymore? It could happen, but it might not. I don't expect anything like the Nomah deal of a few years ago, nothing evel close to getting Abreu. if anything it will be a few role pitchers and perhaps a SP. I hope I'm wrong and the sox have a good #2/#3 caliber SP in their sights, but I doubt it.
  15. Well, Ksushi, I do appreciate your "we get Lugo to never use him" theory. I also appreciate Schillingisthenatural's Tejada theory, although not to get him to play 2nd. That just wouldn't fly with Miggy. While we're at the speculation stage, just a little mind game: would you trade Miggy for Lugo and Crisp? Those are two good players who play key positions and immediately upgrade the O's. What do you think. Just for fun...
  16. I sense contentiousness in this talksox-locker room. Perhaps its because it is the trade deadline and there are tonsof rumors floating about. Like check out this one that I just heard about (made up): a700hitter and CrespoBlows to the Phillies boards for a future draft pick and Phillyphan51223. a700 will have to drop his no trade clause, but the finances of the deal should be enough to make the deal happen. CrespoBlows will probably have to battle for a 3rd posting spot with another one of the posters (Abreuisatraitor) but that poster was rumered to be heading out of town too. Here's the link: http://www.talksox.com/forum/showthread.php?p=179328#post179328 (notice the keen self-referencing!) Sorry fellas, just trying to add some levity to this deep, deep conversation.
  17. Okay, a quick look at Lugo's numbers shows me a few things: Lugo's career numbers are somewhat better than Gonzo's, but it wouldn't raise his production to the level of a great SS. His OBP is decent enough throughout his career, I guess; I don't know much about his defense. The one thing I see that he has is speed. He had 39 SBs last year, and 18 this season through 70+ games. That's pretty good speed. Not that the sox are looking for speed specifically. hopefully while I've been typing this, someone else has clearly elucidated why this deal is potentially a good one and why the sox keep going after Lugo every time trade discussion comes up.
  18. So will someone just give me a quick synopsis explaining why Lugo would be a nice addition to this team? I have seen and followed Lugo a little bit. He's been a dangerous SS over the past few years with some good pop. But is it really beneficial to move him over to 2B? Does this portend a trade of Pedroia? Or, does it indicate that Alex Gonzalez will not be resigned for next season? I would be pretty comfortable with a plus defending 2B like Pedroia taking over moreso than acquiring a guy who is asking for 10 m a year. Am I missing something? And please be honest, try to take the perspective of the FO if possible, talking about Lugo's PLUSSES and putting aside any affinity you may have for Alex Gonzo/Loretta/Pedroia. Thanks
  19. My thinking is that there just wasn't that much interest in an overpayed, over hyped OBP guy like Abreu and the Phillies just needed to pull the trigger. Add another roided outfielder to the Yankees roster, and remove any respect you may have had for the Yankees after their last 3 months of using in-house replacements for their injured stars. Now, they have done what we figured they would have done months ago by going out and getting an all-star, overpriced RF to replace sheffield. Moneyball talks about getting guys who are UNDERvalued, preferably if they have a good OBP. It doesn't say paying a huge price to get guys who can only get on base and run a little bit. I know, the yankees didn't pay much in talent, but they'll pay like 7 mill for the rest of this season, right? this is an indication to me that they will likely not be keeping Sheffield around but, in all honesty, SHeffield scares me MUCH more than Abreu's walks will.
  20. None of the proposed deals are of the "major" deals that we've heard of before. I imagine that means we're missing the major components, probably because those components--if not traded--will continue to be big players on their respective current teams. Nobody wants to rock the boat with a "we're looking to trade Manny" comment, or a "Peavy is gone". Those don't build morale. that being said, linebrink would be great. Is Adrian Gonzalez available for any cost, or is he untouchable?
  21. FER FUKSAKE MAN! Near the plate Julian, near the plate. Where the hell is JVB, Lopez, Timlin, etc.,
  22. Tavarez is here to save the day. Yay.
  23. I swear that's going to be what gets him fired someday. "Troup, you were a great announcer, quite knowledgable, but you had these occasional voice spasms where you made everyone in the world think that the red sox had scored or hit a homer or won the game. We can't have that. goodbye."
  24. Troupiano showing some unnecessary excitement. SWING AND A DRIVE, DEEP TO RIGHT, WAY BACK, WAY BACK, caught on the warning track for the out.
