    I am horrified, disappointed, but not surprised how badly Colorado is doing. It sucks.

    So, does Pittsburgh break their losing record streak this season? They were at .500 at the ASB last season and faded, but I think they can hold on this season. Their division is playing out like they actually have a chance to take it, too. No matter what happens, I think they at least finish with a winning record this year.

    I have been optimistic about everything as much as possible, but even I am starting to wonder if perhaps Beckett might be done as an ace. Obviously he hasn't pitched like one this season, and it seems unlikely that he'll suddenly start now. Its incredibly disappointing. I really like the guy (I have a soft spot for my fellow arrogant douchebags, as long as I don't know them personally), and he will always be great in my book simply for 2007. But perhaps it's time to start figuring out what to do about his performance. Lester, on the other hand, I still believe will be back to form for the Sox, if not in the second half, then next season. He's shown flashes of his past brilliance this season. It seems more like he's gotten unlucky a lot and then started pitching badly to reflect it. I'm not sure, I don't know all the stats. However, I think letting Lester go at this point would be a huge mistake, we could end up watching him flourish somewhere else for years.

    Yeah. While I agree with the decision to let Francona go, I am even less enamored of his replacement. It's like replacing a viewing of the TNG episode "Shades of Grey" with a viewing of the Voyager episode "Threshold". I know that's a somewhat clumsy and overly specific analogy, but for the sake of my millions of fellow romantically-maligned Trekkie brethren, I like to up the number of Star Trek references I make when I'm getting lucky. It makes us look good.

    No reason for it. If you want to bring him up as a catcher, I can see that. You'd have to make a decision about Salty or Shoppach though. Bringing him up as a DH to start with would mean starting him in the majors without letting him develop hs skills as a catcher, which is what they need him for. Right now, with Sweeney and Nava on the roster for the outfield they can use Ross, who is mashing, as a DH. No reason to bring someone up out of position to fill the spot, since it's likely going to be for only a couple weeks.

And with Ells, Crawford, and Pedroia returning, Gonzalez finally hitting his stride and Ross looking like he's getting ready to get streaky, I think the Sox are very much still in this. I'll make you a bet that in exactly one month, the Sox will be within 3 games of first place. Winner picks the loser's signature for a month?

    The Sox outfield was amazing today. They almost single-handedly won this game. Doubront has been a breath of relief to this staff. The Sox are turning around. Mark my words, a month from today they will be within...let's say, 3 games of first.

    Well that was certainly disappointing. I wish we knew what was wrong with Lester. He's been so great in the past that it makes it that much harder to watch him struggle.
