  1. But we aren't talking about a career. We're talking about one game. One game to decide your season. Do you trust Williams to go 4-4 and have it be enough to cover whatever your pitcher gives up, or do you trust Pedro to shut the other team down so all you need is one or two runs?
  2. Now Ross, get on, and Aviles can tie it with one of his timely HRs
  3. Haha you just got owned by a dude named Kelly.
  4. I'm suddenly reminded of the time Rios bobbled a Cora flyout into a HR.
  5. I bought a monocle for the express purpose of allowing it to pop out of my eye into my cup of tea when Salty throws out a runner.
  6. Saltalamacchia. Into the wild.
  7. Alright, some of you need to tone it down a little. Bring down the hatred a few notches. Yes, he's struggling, but there is frustration and irrational suggestions and then there is just being viciously annoying. Some of you are starting to lean toward the latter.
  8. Way to be patient at the plate, Youk. He really is an asset to the...oh. Right.

  10. Did Adam Dunn just steal a f***ing base?
  11. A comment I made in the gamethread, based on a comment by someone else, got me thinking about this hypothetical scenario and where everyone would stand. The situation: It is Game 7 of the World Series. Both you and your opponent are building a new team from scratch, but the only players available to you are current and former Red Sox players, all of them in their primes. The question: You pick first. Who do you take to build that team around. Personally, I think for most people this would come down to two choices. Either Ted Williams, arguably (a weak argument against, probably) the greatest hitter in the history of baseball, or Pedro Martinez, arguably the best pitcher the Sox have ever had. My answer? Pedro. I can't find these exact stats, but I am willing to bet that the percentage of games Pedro struggled, compared to the number of games he pitched, is a lot lower than the percentage of at-bats that Ted Williams did not reach base. Granted, the number of ABs for Ted and the number of GS for Pedro are drastically different, but my point is that it seems much more likely that in a one-game playoff, Pedro could shut down an opposing team far more easily than Ted Williams could carry his team offensively if his pitcher struggled. Pedro was dominant at his prime, maybe more dominant than any pitcher any of us have seen in our lifetimes. If I had one chance to win it all, I'd start Pedro, and sacrifice any other pitcher or position player to do it. Who would everyone else pick? Williams? Pedro? Or someone else? Juilo Lugo, perhaps?
  12. Who is Jenny? I only listen to games on the radio or use Gameday.
  13. Pedro was the best player in the history of the Red Sox. If I was managing Game 7 of the World Series and you told me I could start Pedro on the mound or Ted Williams in the field, but not both, I would choose Pedro before you finished your sentence. Pedro was absolutely incredible when he was on, which was almost always.
  14. I don't know if it's just because two of the most popular Brits in the USA are Gordon Ramsay and David Beckham, but every time I see the name Gordon Beckham, all I can think is "Wow, that is a really, really English name".
  15. They aren't giving Middlebrooks anything to hit with Salty behind him.
  16. And that was without Ells and Crawford.
  17. Well, that isn't a great start. Settle down now.
  18. Just to be on the safe side, they'll probably break his arm.
  19. Last time, thank you.
