  1. Red Sox Magic Number to clinch wild card is 4. 6 games ahead of the Angels and Rangers. Oakland @ Anaheim 4:10 ET Seattle @ Texas 8:05 ET
  2. Tony Massarotti in today's Herald:
  3. I'm wondering why MLB would even get involved in this. Did another team complain about him being there? What harm does he do to the game by sitting in the dugout? What sets baseball apart from other sports is its connection to the past. Cutting off that tie by banning Pesky is foolish. MLB showed be embracing its stars from the past rather than casting them off. It's not like he'll jump out during a fight and take a swing at an opposing pitcher or run out onto the field like Baylor's kid.
  4. Clearly Tek is slumping. He looked bad at the plate tonight going 0-4 and he's got three hits for the week. He gets an off day Saturday with Wake starting but the question is does Francona rest him a little more for the playoffs?
  5. I wish this thread would just fade away, but it has to continue. The way Francona managed the 8th is a nightmare. Why have Timlin and Embree warm up if he won't bring them in for outs? They are the 8th inning pitchers. Pedro's pitch count was high, doesn't he even listen to Bill James? NESN had a shot of Francona sitting there after Williams hit the double and he looked like a guy who couldn't make up his mind. He had a Grady moment.
  6. The most important thing to watch tonight is how Pedro pitches. He gets up for these games and I think he feels he has something to prove. If he pitches great tonight, which I think he will, then I think we all feel better about heading into the playoffs.
  7. I was not "cheering" at home. So he got two guys out. He was still throwing in the mid 80's and his location was erractic. He had no business being in that game last night and he shouldn't be in a game until the Sox clinch a berth.
  8. Timlin was warming up last night. I don't think Francona had a clue what to do last night. If he was saving guys for tonight, that's a mistake. How can you give a game away? Win the game you're playing. Tossing Kim out there was giving up.
  9. It seems obvious he managed last night's game while thinking about Friday's night game. He may not look an inning ahead or even a few batters ahead, but he looks a whole day ahead. So he ended up throwing away a game in the standings. How can a manager manage a game when he's thinking about tomorrow? Win the game you're in, and worry about tomorrow when it comes. It's possible Pedro will go 7 or 8 innings tonight and all of Francona's worrying was for no good reason.
  10. The way I see it, Pedro must stake his claim as number 1 starter by shutting down the MFY Friday night, otherwise, Schilling is number 1. I like the idea of Arroyo as number 2 on the road. The number 4 starter is a code red situation.
  11. Unless he makes a brilliant start next week, it's the bullpen for the playoffs. Over the winter he's a goner.
  12. I'm wondering what Francona was thinking in the 8th inning Thursday night. An intentional walk to Geronimo Gil, a guy hitting .216 and who spent all season in triple A. And then he leaves Myers in to face the obvious righthanded pinch hitter for Gibbons, who then got a 2 rbi hit. Really Francona had no choice because he didn't get a righty up in the bullpen in time. Did he not think Mazz would pinch hit for Gibbons? Does Francona even look a few batters ahead in the lineup? This is just the kind of situational managing Francona needs to be able to handle in the playoffs.
  13. No. I was looking for Damon to bunt in that situation.
  14. I was so glad to see him in the game and smack a hit. The Fenway ovation was great to see.
  15. I am so sick and tired of the Orioles.
  16. He threw mid 80's and couldn't get lefties out. Without his two runs in the 9th we'd still be playing now. Nothing has changed.
  17. I know Trot is starting to swing the bat well but I think Roberts needs some games in right. Watching him steal second on Lopez last night shows the added dimension he brings to the club. Given the chance to get three of four at bats he can create runs.
  18. Saying they won the last two games, so all is well doesn't cut it. If he does this with a playoff team instead of the Orioles, the Sox would be fortunate to come away with one win. Can it be he doesn't handle pressure well? We all know what Ortiz did to him in Game 4 of the ALDS last year. Does watching Lescanic or Embree pitch in extra innings of a tie game make anyone feel good? Foulke may be getting squeezed by the umps but he also laid some fat pitches to two big home run hitters who jumped all over them. If Foulke comes in to close out a one run lead against Sheffield this weekend, I'm wearing a blindfold.
  19. Keith Foulke has now given up home runs in each of his last three 9th inning appearances, two of them are blown saves. I realize pitchers go through down periods, but why now? Most likely Francona will rest him Thursday, but chances are he will be needed in two of the three games this weekend and he needs to turn this around now.
  20. Ball girl alert. She's on Baseball Tonight following Cabrera's homer.
  21. I know the Sox don't bunt, or can't. But Damon up in the 9th with Roberts on third and one out seems like a great spot for a squeeze. I wish this team was more fundamental. But Bellhorn bailed out everyone. Time to play Roberts!
  22. Got to get back to topic here. Everyday I'm growing more to like Roberts. Last night I felt good the Sox would at least tie it in the 9th when Roberts came in to pinch run. His last two games (Friday and Tuesday) he has scored the tying run in the 9th. I think he needs more playing time.
  23. I think Pedro will have a good game Friday. He is 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA in starts after giving up more than 6 runs in the previous start. I'm worried about Wake. Tito needs to have a quick hook with him. Schilling will be Schilling and he'll make us wonder why he didn't pitch last weekend against the MFY.
