The big change in his approach has been that Story is not flailing as much at outside pitches but intentionally hitting them to the opposite field.

It's nothing new for good batters at any level, mainly because it keeps their head on the ball, which is the key to contact.

And fans have been hearing it for years on broadcasts from guys with experience like Remy and Merloni (or watching it for the past four decades since Boggs played Jai-Alai with the Monstah).

I will have tears of joy if he starts taking outside pitches, or going the other way.  Along with Boggs, guys like Carew and Mattingly were geniuses.    You would barely see them move, and sweetly flap the ball down the LF line.  Even when rooting against them, it was beautiful to watch.

But could they hit a pitch 6 inches outside the plate and an inch off the dirt, reaching for it, off balance, and still hit an opposite field HR like Vlad Sr?

Also your list is good but you missed the best ever at smacking outside pitches down the line oppo. Tony Gwynn.

I've never seen anything like that and probably not even close.  Pitches that should be automatic balls became HRs.  Still, he knew he had to go with the pitch.  I use to watch guys like Chavis step in the bucket trying to pull pitches three inches outside.

Yes, thats called "hooking around the baseball" when you pull an outside pitch, and its a lazy fly to center at best.
