There are a few reasons why this is good news, but one thing I like is it shows we are ready to look at call-ups on case by case.  It might not scream "red sox" to rocket a dude through the minors, which I like because I dont believe in rigidity.  It shows they are willing to look at call-up schedules on a case by case rather than manage via rigid rules (e.g. we never do xyz)

That's how it should be: on merit. Some guys need to spend a long time in AA (Sandlin) working on their stuff. Other guys may just fly through the system.

Management 101: you manage based on the person you are managing.

Rigidity is the opposite of what they teach in business school, which I went to (Bentley)

Maybe,

If you were the Twins CBO and your job was riding on this trade including what the press said, do you make that trade?  Or do you give up 2.5 years of one of the best pitchers in the AL despite pitching in a very weak division? And face the wrath of LaVelle E. Neal III the following morning?

Depends if the plan is to get the best offer no matter what, and what other teams offer. I think Duran is worth a lot. I think Cespedes plus two of the three arms I listed are valued, as well. Maybe offer all 3 or add Jordan or Bleis.

I don't know what Cespedes's value is. He isn't a great fielder, doesn't have a projectable frame and is having a rough season in low A. They'd be better off aiming for a return for Bleis, Tibbs or Gonzales.

There is a list of players we could ask them to choose from, but this would be a major get. I’d hate to give Duran and Arias plus Sandlin, or sub Garcia for Arias but maybe….

BTV gives Ryan a surplus value of $69.6 mill and Duran a surplus value of $39.5 mill.  In order to make up that difference, the Red Sox would need to include something a long the lines of Peyton Tolle and David Sandlin.   Not that I know what Minnesota would be interested in…

I have no problem sending Duran, Tolle and Sandlin to the twice for Ryan!!!

Ryan is a great get, but Tolle could be Ryan real soon and for 5 years at low money.

There is also the option of NOT trading Ryan. He’s not a free agent until 2028 after all…

Of course. A lot depends on how much they want to open a window for the next two years. They seem to always want to give the impression they are competing. Getting Duran is not really waiving the white flag, either.

it all comes down to how much they like the players we will offer.

Obviously.

But I also doubt they have any reason to value Mullins over Tolle.  Especially since if they make Ryan available, the Sox are not going to be the only team they talk to.  And that substitution could easily be a deal breaker.

Of course this is all well beyond hypothetical, as there is no reason to believe Ryan has even been discussed as trade bait…

Nobody said they'd value Mullins OVER Tolle. 🙄

I think one of the keys to the Sox making a second half run is Duran heating up and sparking the offense, as well as being a team leader. Trading him would be a mistake.

If they get a better offer for Abreu, I'm trading him instead. Cora is just going to have to figure out the OF rotation.

I really hate to see Duran traded as well.  Or any of our outfielders, for that matter.  That said, with Yoshida coming back, something has to give.  I'll leave it up to Cora to figure out their playing time.

Or tomorrow. Tolle develops forearm problems and spends the next two years recovering from UCL reconstruction.

why do so people over value prospects??,,

I think the key to a second half surge toward the post season is continued improvement from the starting rotation !!!
