Yes, I totally get this point you have made repeatedly. I don't disagree with your position. There was not a strong possibility he'd bust out on offense and make an extension harder to do.

My point is that he still has plenty of time to end up earning every cent of the deal. That will not change the point that the extension was premature and excessive.

(There is also a chance Rafaela is not even in MLB for his last season under the contract, or a bench player. I get that.)

I have been a fierce defender of keeping Refsnyder starting vs every lefty we face, but even I am willing to allow Rafaela playing as Abreu's platoon, starting some games as Duran and Anthony need rest, and also becoming the number one back-up at SS, 2B and maybe even 3B. If someone could move to 1B, we coudl find even more time for Rafaela, but I don't see Bregman, Campbell, Story, Duran or Abreu playing there. (Maybe Ref coudl replace Romy as the 1B platoon, but Cora has yet to play him at 1B, so that is not likely an option.)

With injuries bound to happen. I think things might work themselves out on their own.

 

I understand that we are offensively weak at a couple of positions.  At the moment, the need to improve offense is nothing dire.  Narvaez' and Rafaela's offense, or lack thereof, are not concerns for me.  Casas' lack of offense is a concern.  It's too bad that we don't have a good depth option to replace Casas, if needed.  All that said, I'm good with waiting things out a little longer.

I also don't think people would be screaming about an extension for him as nobody is really upset over a lack of an extension for Hamilton, Slaten, Casas, Crawford, Houck, Abreu, etc. Wilyer has outperformed Rafaela since being called up in '23 and not one person has questioned the lack of extension. Using bWAR (favorable to Rafaela), Abreu has a career 5.5 war while Ceddanne is at 3.6. Where are the Wilyer Warriors banging the drum on getting this extension signed? He's a great defender AND mashes! 

I was very pleased with Rafaela's extension at the time it happened, and still am.  I know the Red Sox aren't going to extend them all, but I likely would be pleased with extending any of the players you mentioned above, except for Slaten.  That's nothing against Slaten, but rather my opinion of contracts for relief pitchers.

Rafaela's extension is peanuts.
