Ferguson needs to improve his batting skills, but he walks a ton.

Rosier and Hamilton are off to nice starts.

Hamilton is repeating High A this season where he hit below 200 last year. I don't know how much meat is on that bone.

You mean Ferguson, I assume.

Yes, he's 23 and ended 2022 at A+. If he gets moved up to AA, this year, and does well, maybe we can start thinking there is some hope.

Guys who can't hit but walk a lot, usually don't translate all that well.

Rosier is not off to a great start in AA, but it is early.

David Hamilton is really starting to show more promise than hope.

Yes, sorry I meant Ferguson.

You don't think Rosier is off to a good start in AA? He's the same age as Ferguson and has a 846 in POR. He was also projected as a bench bat. I didn't even recognize his name prior to this season. He's really a speed guy, 8 SB, 12 H, 3 2B. Ceiling of a bench/5th OFer.

I looked at the wrong stats on Rosier.

You might not have heard about him much, because he wasn't in our system, until the Hosmer-Groome trade. He and Ferguson were part of our haul.

Drohan's scouting report was updated this morning.

Fastball: 92-94 mph. Tops out at 96 mph. Showed increased velocity in spring training 2023; previously sat 88-92 mph, topping out at 94 mph. Pitch shows natural sink and has a good spin rate. Has life up in the zone; hitters pick up the ball late. Has the delivery and athleticism that lend to a solid command and control profile in the future, and has improved in that area over time having once graded out as below-average. Potential above-average command and control profile. Potential above-average offering.

Changeup: 83-86 mph. Pitch shows fade down and away from right-handed hitters. Throws with deceptive arm speed and does a good job of not telegraphing the pitch. Pitch improved in college and took a massive jump forward in 2022. Developed into his go-to out pitch and showed bat-missing ability. Has the ability to throw it in the zone or start it at the bottom and land it down and out of the zone when looking to induce swinging strikes. Velocity increased from 78-81 mph at the same time his fastball velocity jumped in 2023. Potential plus offering.

Curveball: 75-78 mph. Power breaking ball with a plus spin rate. Pitch has 1-to-7 break and will flash depth and tight rotation when he finishes it. Solid feel. Will start at-bats with it or use it to put hitters away. Throws to hitters on both sides. Does a good job utilizing the pitch in conjunction with the rest of his arsenal, which allows it to play up. Potential average offering.

Cutter: 86-90 mph. Short, horizontal break with bite. Able to get in on the hands of right-handed hitters and likes to go to it early in the count. Already shows advanced feel for the pitch after adding it during the 2022-23 offseason. Potential average offering.

Career Notes: Father, Bill, was a pitcher in the Royals organization from 1987 to 1990. Was selected in the 23rd round of the 2017 draft by the Phillies. Successful quarterback in high school and did not commit fully to baseball until he was in college. First professional experience came in the 2020 Fall Instructional League. Participated in the Fall Performance Program in 2021. Was among the top 20 minor league leaders in strikeouts in 2022. Was set to participate in the 2022 Fall Performance Program that was canceled due to Hurricane Ian. Was among the most impressive pitchers in minor league camp in 2023 after his stuff took a big step forward over the offseason, showing increased velocity and a new cutter.

Summation: Potential back-end starter. Ceiling of a mid-rotation starter. Even that projection might be light as there is a chance he takes another step forward with his stuff in the future. Already took a massive step forward during the 2022-23 offseason adding a cutter and increasing his velocity by a full grade. Now profiles as an athletic left-hander who will show four average-or-better pitches and a solid command and control profile. Strong pitchability and pitch utility. Can show hitters four unique pitches in distinct velocity bands that move in different directions. Changeup is a major league-quality out pitch and gives him a weapon against right-handed hitters. Cutter and curveball both are effective also and will flash bat-missing ability. Fastball is very effective at generating weak contact.

@SoxProspects

Two perfect innings for Jacob Webb out of the bullpen today. The 24-year-old righty has a 1.74 ERA over 10.1 innings with 11 strikeouts to five walks at Double-A this season.

Webb was one of the long shot 40 man roster guys last November. I wonder if he'll pop this year. Probably makes AAA soon at this rate.

Ryan Fernandez allows a lead off single then strikes out the side in his return to Double-A.

One of the other pure relief options in AA.

Portland won and is now 12-5.

Drohan is looking like our top pitching prospect, right now.

6 IP, 2H, 1ER, 1BB, 7K (0.78 ERA)

Diaz with his 2nd HR

S Scott 4-4

Rafaela 3-5

Drohan is really on a roll this year. Wonder how long they keep him in AA? Wait until a midseason callup to give him the AS recognition?

First, the huge jump in the offseason rankings, and then this.

He's certainly got more to prove, but WOW!

26K: 4BB in 23 IP

Only 13 hits (0 HRs)

0.74 WHIP

.374 OPS Against

0.78 ERA

It just shows that SoxProspects were right to push him up the rankings. They were on him early. If we knock them for their misses, they can earn their flowers for their hits.

They did kinda miss in the fall, though.

Miss what? Drohan's velo hadn't popped and he didn't have the cutter yet. He's a different pitcher this April than he was in September.

He developed it between Dec 1, 2022 and April 5th, 2023?

I forget the exact number, and it isn’t an exact science, but there’s a milestone the player development department wants a guy to reach before advancing to the next level.

With pitchers, they generally want them to get a certain number of IP before they think of promoting him. He probably gets around 100 IP in AA, which means we are looking at an early July promotion.

I highly doubt we see him in Boston, heck I 100% doubt it. I mean, in 2023, if he keeps this up we will see him in 2024 for sure.

You think he passes Mata, Perales and Walter on the next rankings list? It seems to me to be a near certainty, unless one of the other three start turning things around.

Current:

5. Mata

8. Perales

9. Walter

12. Drohan

Looks like Hamilton is coming back down to earth. His 0-4 brings him to .848, now. Besides the gem thrown by Paxton, Alfaro went 2-4 and Allen went 2-3 w HBP & SB. The batting star was Palk, who went 3-4 w 3 rbi.

Walter, maybe. Perales and Mata no way.
