Devers is truly a wonder.

 

As in we all 'wonder' if the SOX will be able to extend Devers' contract? The Yankems aren't going to let Judge go and the SOX shouldn't let Devers go. Both are the offensive anchors of their teams.

I know i've posted this a few times, but that Devers, considering what he's already accomplished, is only 25 is amazing.

I think you can find a replacement for Arroyo fairly easily. I don't think he's really a starting caliber guy. If I had to, I'd just role out the red carpet for a bunch of young guys and let them duke it out for 2b/ss PA's next year. Honestly, I'd consider just leaving Story at 2b for now and think about what the plan would be for Yorke/2b later on. I think you can piecemeal SS for 2023/24 until Mayer is ready.

 

Certainly a possibility.

I think he can be a very good 2b over the course of his Sox contract if they leave him there. Maybe even help him mentor Mayer when he gets to BOS.

This is the thing I love about Devers, and it's not stat based or metric driven.

 

The guy is an unconventional hitter with amazing instincts, batting skills and hand-eye coordination. My philosophy is that a winning line-up needs batters with varying approaches and a bit of unpredictability, especially to beat teams that study the hell out of their opponent's tendencies and hitting strategies.

 

How can any team or pitcher plan to pitch Devers? You can't. What you beat him with the previous 5 times will lead to a homer on the 6th. When you are facing a pitcher who seems to have our line-up's number, there is always Devers there to throw a wrench in his groove.

 

He may look bad swinging at some pitches a foot out of the zone, but he has a certain calmness about his approach that strongly reminds me of Manny. He also seems to have fun playing the game- like Manny, too, but without the immaturity or childishness coming out in bad ways.

 

Sign this guy. PLEASE!

 

Just do it.

The fact that he totally bought into the FT 2B role, even if Bogey got hurt or needed a rest shows he's fine playing 2B, and he has quickly turned himself into a whiz on D, there.

 

We might try finding a 1 year solution at SS, next year, or give the kids a chance. Right now, the most ML ready SSs might be Downs, Fitzy or Arroyo. I'm not sure Sox Nation could handle that part of the plan. I guess if we get someone else glitzy at another position, they might live with it. But who? Judge?

 

BTW, I see different numbers for Story at SS.

Rafael Devers hit an 0-and-2 pitch that was way out of the strike zone. Not a bad pitch by Paul Sewald but Devers is a great hitter.

 

Sewald surrendered two late-inning go-ahead home runs in two games separated by less than 24 hours.

 

Ouch.

 

Two outs , two strikes and he hits Refsnyder with Devers on deck. The baseball Gods will not let you get away with that.
