RHP Tanner Houck (4-3, 3.46) vs LHP Robbie Ray (5-6, 4.97)

Ray sucks this year. Let's get it

After this game today, we only have 4 more series outside of the Eastern time zone for the rest of the season (Houston, Minnesota, Kansas City, Chicago). No more late games!

Because I'm a baseball genius, I've deduced that Houck won't be closing today. No shite, Sherlock.

And, now we have the reason Houck was not used to close, last night.

Why?? The report I saw was Kutter Crawford is starting today.

Why? It's obvious.

I did not read the report you read and acted on the assumption the previous poster was being factual. Something one should never do, I guess.

Cora had already said last night after the game why Houck didn’t close.

Great no closer again today. Will need 10 to win then

One more time. Last October in the wild card win, the ALDS win over the Rays, and the ALCS loss to the Astros, the Sox went 6-5 in the postseason. In those six wins they did not get a single save. In the five losses, their only blown save was in the 6th inning.

In the 2018 postseason, far and away the Sox best reliever was Kelly, who got zero saves. Instead, Kimbrel, with his 5.19 postseason ERA, got 6 saves, and in 4 of those saves he gave up at least one run in every game.

Last night was a good example of why it's great to have a reliable closer, but the Sox under Cora have demonstrated they can win without a reliable closer.

Also, as I've said before, Houck has yet to demonstrate he's a solid closer. He needed 22 pitches to get 3 outs Friday night, plus he gave up a hit, plus his final out was a very hard hit ball right to Story.

Solid OP. Good news on the late games.

One more time. Last year, or any other year has nothing to do with this year.

Does this mean you'll never mention Renfroe, again?

Posted
I agree with you that Renfroe is not a closer.

Renfroe was last year, and he surely matters to you. Just admit it. You selectively choose what can be talked about, last year and bash otehrs for doing it to make points against you.

Worse yet, is you can't even see the hypocrisy.

Same with the whole rbi issue and Story land.

Well he could go the distance

Renfroe was a closer last year? What game was that? Even though I have changed my mine on Story Land I agree with you he never should have been signed. See we can agree.

Do you try to appear to be an idiot?

My point was about you saying "last year was last year and means nothing now."

It's not about the closer.

It's about you bring up last year when it suits you but bashing others when they do it.

It's call hypocrisy.

You bring up Renfroe so many times, I lost count. That was last year. RF not closer.

I'd say please try to keep up, but I know that's all but impossible with you.

You mean try to keep up when you didn’t know who the starter is today, or why Houck didn’t close last night, or the rules of players sent down, and the time between they could be called back up. That’s what you call keeping up? That’s just in the last few days. Practice what you preach.

Watching the Cubs getting destroyed by the Yankems again. There appears to be more crappy baseball teams than normal this season, the Cubs being one of them. I guess we should be happy that the SOX aren't in that large group so far this season. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

After the checking the pitching stats of the BP, it appears that Austin Davis has been the SOX most reliable reliever. He leads in innings pitched(24) and his ERA is at 1.50.

ERA for RP'ers is not very telling. Many RP'ers come into games with 1 or 2 outs, already, so there is a much less chance their own runner might score.

That's not to say Davis has not been one of our best RP'ers, but here are some other numbers as RP'ers only:

OPS Against

.384 Whitlock

.428 Schreiber

.554 Valdez

.572 Sawamura

.586 Houck

.604 Strahm

.634 Danish

.635 Davis

1.38 Brasier

1.52 Diekman

1.71 Barnes

2.16 Crawford

K:BB

7 Danish & Brasier

6 Whitlock

5 Strahm & Schreiber

3 Houck, Sawamura & Valdez

The difference is, I admit when I mess up or miss something important.

I'm also talking about keeping up with what is being discussed, like talking about last year NOT who is the closer.

Like pretending other posters are defending Story or the pen, when they clearly are not.

I opened the thread and saw Houck was starting. Shoot me for assuming the usually dependable Thunder missed the starter. I'd rather make a mistake like that than totally misrepresent another posters' views over and over and over and forever change the criteria being used to judge players based on who you like and don't like.

There are 7 teams in the AL that are over .500. Four of them are in the AL East.

Before last night's game, the ALE held 4 of the top 6 records in the AL.

Do some Home Work instead of relying on others. That’s lazy, and you’re better than that.

Says the man who continually uses fals facts and never corrects them. Like every publication gave Bloom a failing grade on the Betts trade, and you can't even produce one link that gives him an F. Like saying Story's rbi lead is based on 1 week of red hot hitting, while not taking away everyone else's best week. I could go on and on.

I made a horrible mistake by trusting the thread started by Thunder. If that's the worst you can find on me, have at it. This is like the 3rd time you've brought it up. Repeating it does not improve your silly actions.

Moon, which publication didn’t give the Red Sox a grade, but just said the Red Sox were losers in the deal, and said both the Dodgers, and Twins were winners. Look it up.

I wasn't including Whitlock in my BP post regarding AD, because Whit is now classified as a starter. But thanks for the in-depth breakdown.

Even though Houck isn't starting, if he was starting, Houck going the distance would garner the same odds as me going the distance in the Boston Marathon. A million to one.:(
