The lasting impact of six former players was finally, formally recognized on Sunday with their small-committee selections to the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022.

Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Miñoso and Tony Oliva were elected by the Golden Days Era Committee, and Bud Fowler and Buck O’Neil were chosen by the Early Baseball Era Committee in voting that took place in Orlando, Fla. They will all be honored, along with any selections from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot, at the July 24, 2022, induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y.

I am glad to see Gil Hodges finally get in. He remained beloved in Brooklyn until this day almost 50 years after his death.

Ted Williams killed Gil’s candidacy for a number of years, while ramming Doerr and Rizzuto through the veterans committee. That always pissed me off. Ted was jealous of Gil because Gil was a gentleman, who was respected and well liked by all while Williams was a nasty prick to everyone for a good part of his life.

Hodges - Hall of Very Good (Will Clark, Mattingly, McGriff, Olerud are better and not in)

Kaat - Only gets if wins are a good stat (31st in wins, 16th in losses, not top 100 in career WAR, guys with better resumés: Rick Reuschel, Kevin Brown, Tiant, Cone, Tommy John, Tommy Bond, Pettitte, Saberhagen, Chuck Finley, Dave Steib, Orel Hershiser, Kevin Appier, David Wells, Dwight Gooden, Johan Santana, Mark Langston)

Minoso - Hall of Fame

Oliva - Hall of Very Good (Bobby Bonds, Reggie Smith, Evans are better and not in)

Fowler - Hall of Fame

O'Neil - Hall of Fame

Other than Bobby Grich, who do you think belongs in the Hall that is not in?

Kenny Lofton

Dwight Evans

Thurman Munson

Lou Whitaker

Dick Allen

Bill Dahlen

Along with Grich, those are the top 7 guys that should be in IMO.

I could make a case for Reuschel, Kevin Brown, Nettles, Buddy Bell, Tiant, Willie Randolph, Cone, Saberhagen, but they are not quite there for me.

If I had a current ballot it would say: Bonds, Clemens, Schilling, Rolen, Andrew Jones, Manny, ARod, Ortiz, Sheffield, Sosa.

No Bernie Williams? Thoughts on Lefty O’Doul and Babe Herman?

Next year it will be interesting to see if Papi makes it in on the first try.

We’ll know in a month and a half.

No no and no.

I kind of like Lefty O'Doul for the Hall. Is there any player who was as successful after re-inventing himself? Babe Ruth converted from being a successful pitcher to being an immensely successful hitter, but O'Doul went from being a flop pitcher to being an extremely successful hitter who wasn't a regular position player until age 31 and still posted an OPS+ of 143 playing until he was 40...
