There was a shake-up in the top 10 rankings, this week as Oregon got throttled by Utah (I've long felt the Pac-10 was over-rated) and Michigan St, was pounded by Ohio St.

Of course, my team is Notre Dame. I was there, my Freshman year, when our 3rd string QB, Joe Montana led us to a big Cotton Bowl victory over the Earl Campbell led Longhorns for the 1977 NCAA Championship. One ranking has ND number 5, but my guess is the "committee" will come out with these rankings, tomorrow night- with one week to go...

1. Georga 11-0

2. Ohio St 10-1

3. Alabama 10-1

4. Cincinatti 11-0

5. Michigan 10-1

6. Notre Dame 10-1

7. OK St 10-1

8. Ole Miss 9-2

9. Oklahoma 10-1

10. Baylor 9-2/Oregon 9-2

Here is how I see it shaking out:

1. Georgia beats GA Tech and ends up #1 seeded at 12-0.

2. Ohio St beats Michigan to end up #2 at 11-1.

3. Alabama almost lost to Arkansas and has a tough game at Auburn. I put this as a toss-up.

4. Cincy should win at E Carolina on Friday.

5. Michigan loses to OSU.

6. Notre Dame wins at Stanford and passes the Michigan-OSU loser who will have 2 loses.

7. OK St hosts Oklahoma, and the winner might have an outside chance at squeaking in.

Let's say all this comes true, the rankings before conference championship games might look like this:

1. Georgia

2. Ohio St

3. Alabama

4. Cincinatti

5. Notra Dame

6. OK St.

7. Ole Miss/Baylor/Oregon/ Mich St.

The Conference Championship games are not set, but this could be the most likely match-ups:

SEC Georgia v Alabama

-If AL loses, they have 2 losses and should be out.

-If Georgia loses, maybe bot team are in the top 4.

Big Ten

The winner of OSU & Mich will play Iowa or Wisconsin

-I'm assuming OSU or Mich wins and is top 4.

AAC

Cincy should play #19 Houston.

-If Cincy wins, they will be in.

-If Cincy loses, ND should be in.

Pac 10

Oregon will likely get a rematch with Utah

-If Utah wins, they may sneak in, if there are some upsets.

-If Oregon wins, no Pac-10 team has a chance.

Big 12

OK & OK St are 7-1 in the conference but one will lose, next week. Baylor is 6-2.

-I'm not sure any Big 12 team makes the top 4, unless some upsets happen.

I'm hopeful ND makes it. Take care of business at Stanford, and not having a conference championship game should help, as others knock each other off.

As usual, the Coaches Poll varies from the AP Poll by a little.

Both have ND 5th, but I think the College Playoff Committee will put Michigan 5th and ND 6th.

Both have the to 8 the same, except the Coaches has AL 2nd and Ohio St 3rd. The AP flips them.

The new rankings are out, and OK St passed ND to the #5 slot.

1. GA (plays #3 AL)

2. MI (plays #13 IA)

3. AL (plays #1 GA)

4. CIN (plays #21 Hou)

5. OK St (plays #9 Baylor)

6. Notre Dame (no game)

Notre Dame needs 2 losses by one of 4 teams (#2 to #5 teams) to make the top 4.

5. Notre Dame

I used to be interested in US college football, but I finally had my fill of all the corruption. Even if it wasn't for that I think it gets a little boring when it's always dominated by Alabama and the other regulars.

That is annoying.

The girding of recruits is a messed up system.

At least Clemson, and Ohio State aren’t in the top 4 this year.

ND did not make it, and even though they finished at 11-1 i don’t think they were as good as their record indicated. If they would have played the same schedule in previous years as they did this year it would have been a tougher schedule, but a number of the teams were down this year like Wisconsin., and even though they got better as the season went along after they got their O Line straightened out, and better QB play I don’t think would have been able to match up with Bama, Georgia, or even the Ohio States of the world. Now they have a new coach who is young, and with no HC experience, which to me is a recipe for disaster. Administration was afraid ND would lose players, and coaches, so they jumped to quick. Next year they have a real tough schedule opening up at Ohio State, so even if Kelly would have stayed I don’t think they would have as good a record as in years past.

Agreed.

We would have been throttled by Alabama in the first round.

At least, we make a big bowl.

Fiesta Bowl:

5 ND vs 9 Okl St

Rose Bowl

7 Ohio St vs 10 Utah

Sugar Bowl

6 Baylor vs 8 Ole Miss

Cotton Bowl

1 AL vs 4 Cin

Orange Bowl

2 MI vs 3 GA

I would have liked to have seen a rematch with Cincinnati though, because I think ND is better now then when the ist time they played.

That was our easiest schedule I can remember in a long time.

Yes, had we played Cincy at the end, we might have been undefeated.

Opening against Ohio ST, next year under a new coach is going to be super tough.

We also play Clemson, BYU & Stanford at home and NC and USC away.

A tough schedule with a new HC, a new starting QB, probably a new starting RB, and another revamped O Line is quite a big challenge.

Hamilton, and Williams not playing in Bowl game. Not surprised especially Hamilton.

It seems to be the trend, now in the NCAA.

Sad, but true.

Looks like a rough start for a new HC with a new starting QB, and a real tough schedule starting at Ohio State for Norte Dame. ND is starting the season #5, but I don’t see them finishing in the top 10 this year. Edited by Old Red

College Football begins!

My Domers are 16 point underdogs at Ohio St.

Time to "Wake up the echoes!"

Hanging tuff early, but not much of a offense. Long season for a first year coach with a tough schedule. Kelly got out just in time.

Ohio State deserved to win, but the Irish looked pretty good. Maybe they will end up in the top 4. They'll have to beat Clemson and USC.

That’s being pretty optimistic. I’m not impressed with the QB, and wasn’t last year, or the Oline. I’ve been following ND for over 60 years, and this is far from one of their better teams.

They have a good D, and I think OSU was part of the reason we looked so bad.

We have a pretty easy schedule, except for Clemson (at ND) and at USC. Maybe at BYU might be tough.

It's not too hard to imagine a 1 loss team, but probably 2 is more likely and no #4 ranking.

We weren't ranked 5th for no reason.

Lots of the so called experts I heard before the season thought that ND was ranked to high. New coach, new QB, uncertain at RB. I think the schedule is going to be a lot tougher than you think, and time will tell on that.

I look at the other teams not named Alabama, Ohio St, Georgia and Clemson, and they all have similarities to ND. Every year, one of these top 4 teams lose 2 games, due mostly to their schedule and conference playoff games, especially the SEC, where GA v AL will likely mean one gets its 2nd loss.

It's a free-for-all after the top 4 and ND has as good a chance as any, except they already have 1 loss.

I'm actually encouraged at how well they played at OSU. They looked better than I expected.

Buchner doesn’t look very impressive. It often seems like QB play so what holds Notre Dame back.

I don't disagree, but he was playing against a very good defense, last night.

Certainly not like Joe Montana from my days at ND.

The worst part last night was 18 yds on 11 carries. His legs has to be part of his game.

NCAA football brings out my grumpy side. It's semi-professional football sponsored by universities, with the richest universities fielding the best teams. Pretending that it's an amateur competition among student athletes is a joke.

Agree 100% on that. Alabama is more professional than some NFL teams.

The Irish need to recruit big time quarterbacks. Lately they have been going with what in baseball are known as scrappy, dirt dog types. You are not going to beat the top teams with that. They will play to stop your running game and get your offense off the field. Then your defense will run out of gas in the second half. By the way, it is stupid to open your season on the road against a team that is better than you are. Better to start off at home vs a cupcake.
