He used 7 bullpen arms. Whitlock can’t throw 2 innings every game. Need to save his bullets since nobody else there is reliable.

Normally, usually, that's true. He did make a lot of good moves today, including putting JDM back in the 3 slot, which none of us would have wanted him to do. He sent Eovaldi out for the 6th, and pulled him at just the right moment. He used 7 relievers and all but one of them did the job.

Pen is fine now that Barnes isn't closing. Robles stunk last Wednesday in the 10th 3 days ago, but the rest of the bullpen was great in that game. Richards has blossomed in the bullpen. He's now pitched in 6 games and 10.1 innings in relief and given up 1 run. Last night and today he pitched a clean 8th inning with the game on the line. Today it was the final out in the 8th, also with the game on the line.

 

Barnes is likely to come back, possibly even to close.

Right now it is closer by committee. Cora is getting plenty of examples of who is trustworthy and who is not. Maybe Barnes will find his mojo and regain the closer role.

Actually 'despite' and 'in spite of' are pretty much the same. 'In spite of' just has a little more flow.
