Absolutely stunning rally in the bottom of the 9th. Verdugo, in a slump, gets his 3d single. Dalbec, the worst hitting first baseman in the history of baseball (not just MLB) gets his 2d single. And superstud Hernandez brings them home to tie the game.

No one but no one on this thread had any faith this would happen. Except for one guy, moonslav, who is carrying this team and talksox.

We've got like 50 comeback wins.

The question is, why am I the only guy not giving up?

Hey, where's the guy who said he wanted Duran to pinch run in the 7th inning when it would have done no good.

Tonight he scored the tying run from 1b on a double off the green monster.

On the topic of the one and only greatest Sox manager ever, I will continue to be incorrigible. Cora is right even when you or I or anyone thinks he is wrong.

The amount of vitriol, bashing and misplaced attacks never ceases to amaze me.

Why I keep being surprised at game thread nonsense is beyond me.

Glad the ghost slept through it all.

Maybe, he'll wake up a Yankee fan, until he reads the morning paper.

What a huge win. Needed this with cole going tomorrow.

Big time. This team knows how to play from behind THATS for sure.

You're a great fan, Moon, but you did kind of 'give up' like the rest of us when the SOX went from 1 run down to two runs down. But you're always here until the end.

Guess they just needed to Ghost to go to bed.

Csn we send him some Benadryl for tomorrow?

LOL. Read my simulpost.

In this 4 game series, the Sox vs. Yankees starters will be:

Houck (ERA 3.38) vs. Montgomery (ERA 4.18)

ERod (ERA 5.19) vs. Cole (ERA 2.63)

Eovaldi (ERA 3.57) vs. Taillon (ERA 4.60)

Perez (ERA 4.16) vs. German (ERA 4.16)

I think Cole has the edge (over ERod) for the Yankees in game 2 and Eovaldi (over Taillon) for the Sox in game 3. The other two are crapshoots--remembering of course moonslav's adage that mismatches often produce surprising outcomes.

The Sox to date have a +63 run differential and the Yankees +10--the latter mostly because of their tepid hitting which, however, just might be coming back to life.

Both teams need this series even though the Yankees need it more.

For the Sox tonight's game is the first of 11 back to back games vs. the other three AL East contenders: 4 vs. the Yankees, 4 vs. the Jays, and 3 @ the Trop vs. the Rays.

Then, after 3 @ Detroit, the Sox play 4 more at Toronto (not Buffalo), including a double-header with the make-up game) and 3 at Fenway vs. the Rays.

So that's 18 of 21 games vs. three winning teams, all of whom have a shot at the wild card or the AL East title.

Oh, and right in the middle of those 21 games comes July 31, the so-called final date for making a deal for this season.

Please note my 2d bullet after listing the opposing pitchers and their ERA's. That said, I did not at all expect both Montgomery and Houck to be so good. Neither gave up an earned run. Our good reliever Ottavino gave up 2, as did their good reliever Green.

We still had Barnes for the 10th, and the Yankees had Kriske and his 4 wild pitches.

I know you did. And I said at the time the 7th was too early.

Years ago, the Sox would sometimes run for Ortiz in the 8th. Often as not, his spot would come up in the 9th or 10th snd he’s on the bench. Never pinch run until you have to.

I would specially knowing Dalbec wouldn’t have been AB again.

All I said was "So much for 1 run."

I never gave up, tonight.

(I have on other games.)

I think most of us ate crow tonight. Goes good with a white wine.

I get the frustration effect, but the thing is, it will happen again tomorrow and the next game, and the next....

Nobody seems to learn anything. (Not that I am the perfect fan.)

Why?

Who gets the key hit in the 9th, then?

You wouldn’t need that. You would have been winning entering the 8th.

Said that we somehow won this one and is all that matters.

And you absolutely were the only one who reminded us of all the other comebacks. Plus this is another game-winning thread started by you.

It's not Cora's fault Bobby Dee does not go to 3B.

The 7th inning batter often gets up again, especially on a good offensive team know for comebacks.
