Ted Williams handled the shift quite well. He just hit it over their heads.

 

 

Actually, during an interview with Larry King, Ted was asked by Larry how did Ted handle the shift when he had to face it? Ted simply answered "I just hit it over their head."

In 1941, Williams posted a .406 batting average; he is the last MLB player to bat over .400 in a season. He followed this up by winning his first Triple Crown in 1942

 

The color line, also known as the color barrier, in American baseball excluded players of black African descent from Major League Baseball and its affiliated Minor Leagues until 1947 (with a few notable exceptions in the 19th century before the line was firmly established)

 

Also Ted didn't face Hispanic/Latino players.

 

If I'm not mistaken, Ted was half Latino. I believe either his father was born in Mexico.
