It's absurd that 6 IP and 3 ERs is a QS, but 8 or 9 IP and 4 ERs is not.

5.2 IP and 0 ER is not.

I understand a cut off has to be placed somewhere, and I'm okay with keeping the QS stat, as is, but we could create another stat and call it something else- like "Good Starts."

4+ IP 0 ERs

5+ IP 1 ER

6+ IP 2 ERs

7+ IP 3 ERs

8+ IP 4 ERs

You've said this before, but this time recognized that any standard, while somewhat arbitrary, is better than none. Your sliding scale makes sense, but requires memorizing the 5 parts.

Plus I think one of the key measures of a "quality" start should be 6 innings. The Sox have played just 21.6% of the season, and commentators are talking about overuse of the bullpen even though the Sox have 9 bullpen pitchers because their rotation averages 5 innings per start. If 4 scoreless innings becomes the standard, the Sox should consider bringing back Swihart so they can go with 10 position players and 15 (or is it 16) pitchers.

Just memorize 2 things: it starts at 4 IP and 0 ERs and adds an inning & ER each step.

This is for "Good Starts" not "quality, and it's actually harder on the 6 IP case (2 ERs not 3).

I'd be fine with taking away the 4 IP/ 0 ER category, but to me that beats 6 IP & 3 ER.

BTW, this is a tweaked version of what I posted earlier.

9IP and 5ER is a bad start.

Is this easier and better?

4+ IP 0 ER

6+ IP 2 ER

8+ IP 3 ER

or

5+ IP 1 ER

6+ IP 2 ER

8+ IP 3 ER
