Chavis is not A MLB caliber player it’s time ......

One-on-one comparisons are virtually worthless but I found fascinating these lines from the first two seasons of Travis Shaw and Michael Chavis as Red Sox infielders:

TS 2015-16 777 PA, .251/.312/.442/.754

MC 2019-20 445 PA, .251/.315/.440/.754

Clearly, Shaw is a better slugger, but Chavis gets on base more...

Thankyou and I’ve really come to question the way we have treated this player .I have been patient with others and I’ve watched the big team destroy Swi .I don’t trust them right now and question our scouting period .I believe in this player he’s been patient himself .....it’s time to cut the fat and let’s get on with this rebuild .Dalbec is playing in two weeks as a regular or I’m done with 2020 honestly .

Dude... we are 100% on the same page! Scouting has seemed piss poor and I don’t have much faith in any draft pics as of late.... cut bait and move the hell on. We need life in this team or that cliff will become a lot steeper to the bottom!!

Chavis is a guy you include in a trade. I'm not saying the Sox can get a lot for him, he would just be an additional piece in a trade. I don't see Chavis playing a significant role for the Red Sox in the short or long term.

How could this get worse?

well the injury bug could hit let’s say Bogey or Raffy. And then Evo could strain an oblique or start having some elbow tenderness and not be able to be shopped before the deadline and then we would become the Pirates.

I think it's better to have the worst record rather than the third worst.

Yes, 3 more times for every 1,000 plate appearances!! Your sarcasm is noted lol...

Do you think Chavis is likely to replicate Shaw's 2017-2018 seasons? I would tend to think it's highly unlikely due to the discrepancies in K rate.

I do wonder what happens to Chavis this season once his BABIP gets lower than 387. He seems to be making great contact when he does so, but that BB/K is something else.

Also, all these discussions ignore that Shaw provided above average defense while Chavis continues his negative dWAR.

Chavis reminds me a lot of Steve Pearce. I think the likelihood is he ends up a platoon power position player with enough positional variability to be a crack utility guy at 2b or 3b. But he needs to cut his swing down a bit and make some more contact. His strike zone is laughably predictable. You cannot throw him soft and down. If you throw him heaters in the upper part of the zone, he cannot hit them

He can't handle anything up or away. He's actually WORSE at handling high pitches this year than last.

Now compare to 2015 Travis Shaw:

Shaw also didn't bolster his numbers by being played primarily into his strengths, like Chavis has. That, and the reasons you mentioned, are why Shaw can be a starter, but Chavis is a role player...
