Do you know what is in his contract? Most players listen to the team and the doctors. You are putting too much responsibility on the athlete to meet you view of social awareness. Very judgmental on your part. Sale putting off his surgery as some show of selflessness would have been as meaningless to the cause as wearing a ribbon to support the cause.

Showing solidarity in the face of a common enemy is never meaningless. It is morale and working together to defeat this enemy that will win this battle. It is putting service above self.

Is this really the case though? The surgery was performed at the Kerlan-Jobe Institute, where what they do is orthopedic and sports-related medicine.

What resources of theirs are actually going to be called on in the coronavirus fight? Do they have anything that can't be obtained elsewhere and in a more cost-efficient way?

I don't know the answer to those questions, just posing them.

Maybe N95 masks. We've reached the point where TV shows about doctors are donating their prop masks to hospitals. So if a few people gowned and masked up for these surgeries, the same number of ER nurses and doctors treating the highly infections COVID-19 were unable to....

Maybe Sale will wear a ribbon or donate some medical supplies. Would that satisfy you?

People act like the delay in these surgeries would be only for a few weeks or a month. No one knows how long this crisis will continue. And the crisis will likely get worse before it gets better. They got the surgeries now in places where they weren't diverting any resources away from corona virus care. In a month or so, every part of the country may have burdened resources. Getting it now was prudent judgment. Also, the teams who are paying these players tens of millions each season realized that a 6 month delay in the surgery could cost an additional season of playing time. It was probably the teams call and Sale should not be expected to defy his employer.

That same logic applies to hoarding toilet paper....

Yes. IIRC the last time Sale defied his employer he got traded!

But this does raise the question of the relationship between management and a team member. Does the player actually have any say in what his treatment is going to be (and when he gets it) or is he actually just a highly paid piece of meat with no say in what goes on in dealing with his own body?

Nonsense about the few masks that they might have used.

Here's some mask news:

I remember that the Red Sox and Schilling were at odds over his treatment/rehab issue, and it became a contractual dispute. The Yankees are looking to renege on $20 million to Ellsbury because he saw an unapproved doctor.

The Jacoby Ellsbury case taught us teams are certainly heavily invested in a player following team recommendations.

The Jets had an OL who refused surgery on his meniscus last year and was fined by the team for it...

Like I said you just wouldn't understand. So I have no intention of wasting my breath

Well I would certainly hope not. We wouldn't want you having shortness of breath and then thinking you had COVID-19

Only someone young and immature would joke about such a thing at a time like this.

I would argue I'm more mature than you. Or at least more rational and composed.

You are clueless.

I don't know, sounds like a pretty immature thing for an adult to say over the Internet. You're so opposed to anybody with a different opinion than yours, or at least that's what I've picked up on. When someone doesn't agree with you and you can't easily change their mind, you resort to insulting them. That's pretty childish in my book

There is a lot of that going on in today's society. It's very unfortunate.

I am merely stating a fact. Given your age and life experience you are absolutely clueless. Reminds me of the young person who just graduated with his BA degree. After a few weeks on the job he went to his boss and asked for a raise in view of his academic prowess. The boss said "son, I see you have a BA degree, come back when you have learned the rest of the alphabet" It is an old joke I know. But it is also a true story.

Anybody here can say anything they want about me. I can take it. I'm very honest and straightforward with people, and I wish people were the same way to me. I also feel humor is a form of medicine. Elktonnick, if you don't, that's perfectly okay, and I respect that, but other people feel the same way as I do, so I'm going to continue to make jokes when appropriate. At the end of the day we're all strangers on the Internet. If you don't like me that much, that's fine. I'm used to people not liking me. Just ignore me, there's even a fancy button you can press so you don't see my posts. If that doesn't work for you, nobody is making you be here.

Ok, so how does making a joke make me clueless, given the fact that the anecdote you just provided is your definition of "clueless"

I guess you are really too young to understand.

Or you're just afraid that I'm right so you're going to pretend like you have something that you're not telling me. Have a nice day

It does seem like over time nearly everything can be joked about. The only thing that comes to mind immediately that's hasn't been a subject for humor is the Holocaust. I still haven't seen many jokes about 911 either. However, timing is everything and IMHO it's way too early to be joking about COVID-19 when people are still dying.

As I said, JMO.
