Recently there was comment made how baseball will eventually become a niche sport.

Here is an interesting article that appears to indicate that more kids are playing baseball.

According to the Aspen Institute which promotes youth sports participation and used SFIA data 13 .6 % of kids 6-12 played baseball in 2018 up 3%. Baseball was second to basketball which had a14.1 % participation rate. USA Today Aug 23, 2019.

It went from 12.7 to 13.1%.

In 2008, per the Aspen study, it was 16.5%. So I'm correct in stating that baseball popularity in kids is waning.

If you want to look year over year and find one year where participation increased 3%, that's not really a sizable jump. In reality, there are a ton of kids playing t-ball right now, but they all start to drop out around Coach Pitch leagues. That increase is cool for t-ball, but it's not being shown at the upper levels. There are lots of reasons for this (economic barriers, time barriers, travel leagues, etc.).

i'm on the Board of our local league. numbers have been dropping yearly. some of it is due to smaller pool of kids and some of it is due to lacrosse.

Grammatically you are not correct. While it was 16.5in 08. It waned to below that until 2017. It increased in 2018. An increase does not mean participation is waning. It means it had waned but is now doing the opposite of waning , it is waxing.

I've seen the same thing in MA and FL when talking to board members.

I hope to be proven wrong and that baseball becomes America's Pastime again. I just don't believe it's the case.

Slasher, please review my post for any grammatical inconsistencies. Thank you.
