Even a better question what did Rick Porcello ever do in baseball to justify his 4 year $82.5 mil dollar contract? That's just plain stupidity on the Red Sox part you can't throw mil dollar contracts on mediocre players or pitchers.

Really? Still?

Porcello positioned himself to reach free agency by age 26 with no history of injury and a track record of pitching 180-200 IP per year, which absolutely has value. He was paid for what he was going to do, and despite your stubbornness, he came through for the first 3 seasons. So drop it. Porcello’s contract expires in a couple weeks. The fact that it took you 3 years and 11 months to rant so frequently about a 4 year deal does mean that it was worth it for the majority of the time.

On the other hand, Eovaldi was young, but not as young as Porcello. And also had a lengthy history of injuries and two T.J. surgeries in his past. There was really nothing there to justify his contract at all. He was neither a great pitcher nor an innings eater. He had a great fastball and was a star in the World Series, but I think that’s it. And this is a much bigger deal than Porcello’s expiring contract, unless you hate Mookie Betts...

Just look at Porcello record other than a inning eater he was nothing if they're not quality inning it's garbage He's nothing more than a J A Happ type pitcher who also flirted with some seasons close to 200 IP.

Doesn't matter how many s*** inning a guy pitches they are still s*** innings with an elevated ERA.

I don't. I think it is dumb. DD made a terrible decision not building a BP this year, but as has been pointed out, the starting pitchers (a strength of 2018) fell well short on production. Also, they victimized themselves with the ill-advised "let's pretend the season starts May 1st" strategy. I think the dismissal was very premature.

It wasn't just the bullpen this year. DD just seemed to be kind of asleep at the wheel. More evidence is the fact the biggest 'reinforcements' to our lineup late in the year have been Chris Owings and Gorkys Hernandez.

Nate's 7 innings of glory in an otherwise entirely unspectacular career.

jung, if you're going to criticize the Eovaldi signing, that's fine. But stop with the '7 innings' crap. Use actual facts. Eovaldi had a good half-season last year and then he pitched 22.1 excellent innings in the postseason - not just 7.

A better way to evaluate a guy like Porcello might be Quality Starts and Quality Start %.

And how much does Happ make? He signed a contract for $17mill when he was 10 years older than Porcello. And he won't win a Cy Young award on it, either. You're again arguing that Porcello actually was paid fairly. Again, it took you over 3 years and 11 months to make this rant on a contract that has only 2 weeks left. That speaks volumes...

Boston righthander Rick Porcello has posted 10.7 fWAR, valued at $85.6 million, so far under his four-year, $82.5 million contract with the Red Sox:

We've already tried that with Larry...

Tell that to the bullpen arms...

Eovaldi is a rare freak who is capable of throwing 98mph for 6 or 7 innings despite a relatively average build by MLB pitchers' standards. Or maybe, he is a prime example of why a lot of pitchers don't do this, as it has clearly taken a significant toll on his arm...

In retrospect, statements like this one and 'there are no offseason surgeries planned that I know of' tend to support the whole 'disconnect' theme in DD's departure...

Larry isn't Babe, Slash, I can guarantee that. Babe is one of a kind.

i think you are correct. i'm just in a bad place right now with this damn team of ours.....

Putting aside for a moment how hard he throws or the one thing I admire in him, that he challenges hitters, Nate has had what amounts to a relatively lackluster career. What has he done to deserve 4/$68. How highly did DD value that one lighting strike of the WS 7 innings? I wanted them to try to sign Nate ...but 4/$68???? What the f*** was that?

4-$68

Whoops ....sorry....no idea where 168 came from.

PS...thanks for catching that. That is what I get for having multiple screens open.

I thought it was a dumb deal at the time based upon his health history and that, for how much more, Dallas Keuchel was still looking for a job. I would have given in to Kimbrel's insane demands before giving that contract to Eovaldi, and said so at the time...

I don't know what happened there. I have no rational explanation beyond the starry eyed logic of the magical WS 7 innings and DD possibly insisting on doubling down on his 2018 late season acquisition binkies.

I will guess at one:

DD went "WOW, a guy that we can slot everywhere.....the pitching version of everyday player Brock Holt"

Whereas many of us might have preferred....."MEH....a pitcher really not slotted anywhere definitively with a more than spotty health record and a lackluster career as a starter."

DD payed WOW money when he likely should have been thinking MEH money or let him slide.

This is what DD does. He gets enamored with the clubs he builds and then he extends them beyond a reasonable level. He did it in Detroit. He did it in Boston. He left a dead farm and a payroll full off past their prime stars. It's part of the DD experience

I think D.D. , and many Sox fans as well , fell in love with Nate largely because of his valiant post season performance . A look at his entire track record would have cast doubt on the wisdom of that contract . At any rate , John Henry signed off on all of Dombrowski's moves . He could have said no .

Did he? I honestly don't know how involved he gets on this kind of stuff...

Great...so that is what justifies 4/$68. Glad to know! Still didn't make sense.

For the record, just responding to Moon's post #202

Porcello never won a Cy Young either it was given to him by the controversial decision of 2 idiotic Tampa Bay sport writers. Explain to me how the most received first place vote pitcher get omitted entirely off 2 ballots. Come on that's is so ludicrous it's beyond imaginable for any type of baseball intellectuals with such deluded perspective of the award meaning. I get it if they didn't think Verlander was their no 1 pick but not worthy of 5th spot it was so ridiculous all of baseball started talking about it. One of the Tampa Bay writers felt so ashamed of how stupid it made him look he openly offered his explanation why Verlander wasn't on his ballot he claimed he sent his ballot 2 weeks early during that time Porcello imploded and Verlander excelled to the point of that he only allowed 1 run in 14.25 innings. He claims that if he waited he would've had Verlander near the top of his ballot. Corey Kluber said it best and he was in the running for the Cy Young award it's not that Porcello wasn't deserving of the award it's just that Verlander deserved it MORE.

Have to feel for Justin Verlander . Poor guy never seems to catch a break in life .

Eovaldi pitched pretty well last year in the regular season. He added a cutter to his repertoire and his K/BB ratio improved dramatically.

There were reportedly a bunch of other teams interested in him.

I get questioning the deal because of his health history.

But the idea that they signed him strictly for his postseason is dumb.

Houston really wanted Eovaldi, and we know how bad they are at evaluating good talent.
