Why be fair to a greedy player? He did it to himself.

Hard to say how greedy he was when all he turned down was a Qualifying Offer at a time when everyone turned down Qualifying Offers. Were there other offers he was also rejecting?

nobody ever took QO. it wasnt until 2 full years later when a player took the QO for the first time.

also, it didnt hurt drew at all as the contract he signed with the Red Sox for that season ended up being the exact amount of the QO $14.1MM.

so how is that greedy?

Lots of older and/or less talented relievers had no trouble landing multi-year deals this winter...I find it hard to believe the QO is the only offer he's turned down.

I think notin's comment was about Stephen Drew? Gets hard to follow the posting chain sometimes.

Yes. We were on Drew at the time.

Drew was more the victim of a new system. Kimbrel overvalued himself...

does this season count as one of the 3? thats a pretty good paycheck for only playing 2/3 of the season. or is this years salary prorated?

much less then the 100/5 he was expecting after hopping off the duckboat last fall......

On this deal, I’m calling “Bad Dombrowski!! Bad! Bad!!” for sitting out this negotiation.

With the tax implications, Kimbrel runs about $21-22 mill with luxury tax, depending on pro-rating, etc. That’s far less than the $29mill the Sox are paying to Castillo and Sandoval to play elsewhere.

I get that DD inherited both contracts and had no choice. But on some level he is saying it’s more important to clean up the messes of other GMs than to fix his own...

Can I agree with your assessment and at the same time say that Castillo's and Sandoval's contracts are inconsequential within this discussion?

I'd have been all over Kimbrel for $10M this year, and worry about next year next year. If he had another good year and the Sox want to reset he might be able to be traded.

Castillo is certainly irrelevant to the discussion. It’s very possible that Sandoval is a big part of why the Sox didn’t get involved.

But with Dombrowski and bullpens, one never knows. This year isn’t the first time he has not spent on one...

Theo has lost his mojo.

Cubs are a front runner to make playoffs and desperately need a closer. That conf is weak as hell outside of LA.... I guess you could say Milwaukee as well, but a closer what a strong need for the Cubs. Good move on their half.

The budget has caught up to Theo as it has with DD.

We'll see how this deal shakes out.

Why ?

Yes, tell me why he increases your liking of the Cubs.

The Cubs and Pirates have always been my fave NL clubs, but getting Kimbrel does not move me in any direction, except maybe to think Theo is slipping.

Simple . I do like and respect all players who contributed to the Red Sox success . A success that I started to think I would never live to see and enjoy . I still appreciate what they have done , even after they leave . Kimbrel contributed big time . Three straight A.L. East titles . I have difficulty understanding those who don't see that . As for Theo , he has a pretty good track record of knowing what he is doing. I am and always will be a die hard Sox fan . But I will be rooting for the Cubs in the N.L.

I'm happy we had Kimbrel, but he's gone now. I guess I just don't feel the love for ex Sox players that others seem to do.

It's not like I hate Kimbrel or am not appreciative, but I don't see how him going to the Cubs makes me like him or the Cubs any more. I'm neutral to wherever he signed, except the Yanks.

It might make it harder for us to win it all, if the Cubs make it to the WS, although it would be a good story line.

Kimbrel was great for Boston. But he moved on from us and me from him.

I’d no sooner root for a former Sox player just because than I would attend an ex-girlfriend’s wedding...

The Cubbies are pretty likable anyway , even without any ex Red Sox connections. They are kind of the Red Sox of the National League.

My first live game I ever saw was Ernie Banks and the Cubs at Wrigley Field. (I lived in Milwaukee then.)

I've always liked the Cubs.

I don't need Kimbrel to like them more.

Well, it’s different for me since I’m surrounded by Cubs’ fans...
