Then why wait till last night to do an MRI. What MRI's are suddenly just too expensive for the Boston Red Sox? I suspect Cora expected Wright to pitch. Not sure what happened. But there is some explanation better than Wright was already in trouble and the Sox waited till last night to do an MRI.

You could be right, but to me the pre-MRI acid test was Cora's unwillingness to use Wright last night when he clearly could have made a huge difference. I'm sure Wright had at least one or probably two bullpen sessions after his last game on Sep 29, which itself wasn't all that great. Same deal back in I think late June when he got hammered in a start and immediately went on the DL for a long time.

Why then put him on the ALDS roster? Hope, pure and simple. Plus there wasn't much left to choose from.

When the knuckleball is dancing it can definitely be a beautiful thing. But I think Mr. Wright is kind of a problem child. Maybe better off without him.

Poyner should take the spot. I’m still chocked Kelly made the roster over him, Velazquez and Jonson.

I do not have a whole lot of trust in Kelly, but I'm not surprised he made the roster.

It looks like Hembree is getting the call to replace Wright. Cora like his strike out rate.

Actually, I think we already know. Kelly took Wright's place--a huge gamble, but probably justified. I'm pretty sure Cora knew about the knee problem when he announced Kelly as one of the 25 for the ALDS. Kelly had three really good months this year--April, May, and August--and three terrible ones--June, July, and September.

It doesn't really make any sense for Cora to put Wright on the roster if he knew that Wright couldn't pitch. I really think Cora was planning on going with Wright to back up Sale in last night's game.

You live by the knuckleball, you die by the knuckleball.

If he was healthy, there are always innings available...

Many pitchers live or die by the fastball, curve ball, slider or whatever.

While it is true, many knucklers rely on just one pitch, but most pitchers have just one pitch they really cannot be effective without.

The Yanks are better off without Wright on the roster- for sure.

No need to apologize for a knuckleballer because the darn thing works. Wright can in fact throw a fast ball in the 80's and has a big sweeping knuckle curve. But he sticks to the knuckler almost exclusively because it works. If you throw out just one game, that horrendous start in June when he gave up 10 runs in 3 innings and promptly went on the DL, Wright went 50 innings and 19 games this year and gave up 6 runs for an ERA of 1.08. In September he gave up 1 ER on 13 innings.

But clearly the knee is a problem.

Yes, but it bugs me how so many posters view knucklers differently. Every pitcher who is stuggling with their best pitch has trouble. Knucklers are no different.
