I'm disappointed Porcello can't hit in this series.

Sandy Leon last hit was nearly a month ago and 1 for his last 38 for a microscopic .026 BA

I personally don't give a s*** about Leon's hitting as long as he is optimizing what the guy on the mound is doing. We have hitting out the wazoo, but our pitching is sometimes suspect. Leon's defensive catching stats are way better than Vazquez's or Swihart's, and they don't include how the pitchers have more confidence in him.

I'm not rooting against Vazquez or Swihart because we all know Leon can't catch every game. When either is catching, I not only root for him but comment when he does something well--including the odd hit now and then. About which, this: when either Vazquez or Swihart gets his OPS above .800, I'll be ready to say it's time to go with a catcher who can hit.

it amazes me how people only see offense in baseball. i blame girls and their love of the long ball......

It amazes me that whenever someone wants to talk about offense you always deflect to defense like it's the ONLY part of baseball.

I'm not sure there is anyone on here who "only see(s) offense in baseball."

Sandy and Vaz have the same fWAR. It's not as night and day as some people make it out to be.

Also, the Sox have basically wrapped the regular season up and there isn't that much to talk about on a slow Friday at work.

At 200 min PA's, Sandy and Vaz have the 2nd worst and 3rd worst fWAR's for catchers, respectively.

That's a number that tries to include both defense AND offense because they BOTH kinda matter.

CERA hold the same weight as fWAR?

if so, what would our SP fWAR be without Sandy's CERA?

would our SP WAR be lower with Vaz or Swi catching full time?

i 1 million percent dont think the Catchers offense matters.

especially in the post season.

it doesnt take too much to see a year when we won a WS by replacing an offense first catcher that had botched some defense plays with a defense first catcher.

This is a chicken or egg scenario. Not sure there is a definitive answer.

Ok, so offense doesn't matter for C or CF. At what point does offense matter? How many black holes is a lineup able to carry?

i guess my answer to this would be 1 less than is needed to win 11 out of 19.

my priority in postseason will always be pitching and defense.

who are the best hitting catchers of all time?

piazza? 0 rings

IRod? 1 with Fla vs EE in 2003

Carter? 1 with NYM in bleeping 1986

Fisk? 0

Campanella? 1

Bench? 2

IDK...i dont think it's crucial to have a catcher that can hit. but i've been wrong many times before.....

We don't necessarily need a catcher that can rake, but it would be nice to have one that wasn't an automatic out.

Why'd you leave Yogi Berra out of your list? Posey? Posada? Molina?

Meh.

I stay with Leon in the playoffs.

I completely agree. And I'm a Vazquez fan.

Vaz just hasn't really cut it this year.
