Bogaerts' WAR projected over 162 games is 6.7. That would be a new career high for Manny Machado. Xander will be 27 for the entire regular season of his first FA year. Anyone thinking they were getting Xander at a discount were sadly mistaken. If this kid puts up back to back 6 WAR seasons while showing passable SS defense or better, he will be paid in the Machado realm.

No 2 players has benefited more from Cora's approach than Bogie and Betts.

Betts has benefitted from the presence of benintendi and Martinez more than anything.

Bogaerts is having a pretty darn good season.

He's being overshadowed by Betts and JD.

He is looking pretty good.

I liked juxtapositioning him with Lindor ( my standard for AL SS ) this series.

It's certainly one of Dave's biggest challenges going forward.

He'll be young enough to take the risk on a long term deal.

I'm usually one to caution making these deals, but this guy is special.

He sure is. But if we can't lock him up before free agency and it gets into an auction it's going to be tough.

Mookie said he's going to be paying a lot of attention to what Machado and Harper get.

We have 2 more offseasons in which to sign Mookie to an extension.

And one more to make a decision about Sale, who is not as likely to sign a team-friendly deal this time around...

Sale is an even tougher call. Great pitcher, major durability concerns.

Were I the GM, I would likely let him walk. He's very tough to replace, but, large market or not, financial resources are limited and I greatly prefer retaining Betts over Sale.

And the durability concerns are another very significant factor. Nothing ruins a pitcher more than pitching, and Sale just scares me out there with his freakish mechanics. Let someone else pay him heavily to sit on the DL...

I bet (pun intended) he goes to free agency, and we sign him.

The question is what Sale's durability concerns do to his market. Will someone really give him 6 years. Boston should have no qualms about offering a very lucrative, short-ish deal. (3 years, $100-$110M) There are some tax concerns - but they are Henry profitability concerns more than baseball ones.

All it takes is one renegade GM to give him 4 or 5 years. and someone will give him that, even if they have to include an opt out clause...

I could see Boston offering a deal like that anyway - something which amounts to a 3 year guarantee with some vesting etc.

You think Sale, who will entering his age 31 season, and, by the time he reaches free agency, could easily have finished his eighth straight year with a top 6 Cy Young finish, is going to settle for a 3 year deal with the option to prove himself to get more years? Free agency is something ballplayers play their entire lives to achieve.

Sale and his agent will absolutely ask for more than 3 guaranteed years. And they will want to ability to end the deal sooner, not the chance to prove he has earned anything more...

that's a good bett. do we get hometown sale for sale or do we let him sail?

Just please no puns about Bogaerts...

He will likely get 7+ years.

May 3 Price 3.2 IP, 9 runs, 8 H+BB

June 23 Wright 3.1 IP, 10 ER, 12 H+BB

July 1 Price 3.1 IP, 8 ER, 9 H+BB

July 13 Porcello 2 IP, 8 ER, 11 H+BB

Aug. 10 Eovaldi 2.2 IP, 8 Runs, 12 H+BB

Aug. 24 Velazquez 2.2 IP, 8 ER, 11 H+BB

That's 6 amazingly horrible starts with 8 or more runs scored off the starter in less than 4 IP.

I wonder what our SP'er ERA would be without these 6 games.

Easy enough to figure out.
