Do you remember that pitcher who came up from AAA and had a good couple of starts and the went on the DL because he cut his back rolling out of bed onto a drinking glass. I don't think he ever pitched again for the Red Sox. That just didn't add up.

No.

Paxton Crawford.

Not as bad as shooting yourself in the leg (Brentz).

What did Kopech do a couple of years ago. He either punched someone or a coke machine.

Something really dumb.

Now he is about to marry very rich and have a TV show about it or something equally stupid.

That Crawford story was funny. It is consistent with the stories Merloni told. The story about how the Sox brought in a Doctor to instruct players in the safe and proper usage of PEDs.

Other weird or unfortunate Sox Injuries:

1946: Ted Williams: HBP in an exhibition game in early October! Plays injured during the WS and goes 5 for 25 with no HRs.

1967: Tony Conigliaro: Horrifying HBP to the eye during the "impossible season".

1991: Jeff Gray, in the middle of having a great season with the Sox, has a stroke while preparing for pregame activities.

1975: Jim Rice misses the playoffs due to a wrist injury.

1992: Carlos Quintana crashes a car rushing to bring his two brothers to the hospital after being shot. He was never the same.

2010: Ryan Westmoreland: Very sad story. Brain surgery ended a promising career, before he ever made it to the bigs.

2010: Ryan Kalish: Messed up shoulder/neck ended his career early.

There were many more...

The Sox also had a top prospects named Andy (?) Yount who cut open his hand on a drinking glass and never pitched again. The Sox released him and didn't tell him, but he did read about it in the newspaper...

Harry Agganis and his sudden death.

Jim Lonborg's skiing accident.

And who remembers Juan Pena? He started 2 or 3 games for the Sox in like 1996, including a two hit CG shutout. Then he went on the DL and was never heard from again...

Didn't a Sox player hurt himself on a screen door?

Not sure but former Patriot running back Dave Meggett once hurt himself by trying to extract a post-service refund from a screaming whore. Close enough?

Ortiz might make a good manager one day, but right now, he is not far enough removed as a player to be a manager.

And how many mangers wee never first time manages? How many were still playing? Durocher, Cronin, Boudreau, Durocher plua many other others.

Ortiz is a leader. I suppose many have forgotten the Center Field Speech. He has been a leader in the clubhouse as well as off the field since coming over from the Twins!

IF he would take the job, he would be perfest!

Ortiz isn't putting a jersey on again, book it. He likes being in his suit analyzing. There is almost no reason for great players to return to the dugout. And there are very few elite managers who were HOF talents.

I think he might be a very good hitting coach. Based on anecdotal info, part of what made him great was his understanding of how pitchers were going after him and his ability to predict what pitch was coming next.

I can't see Ortiz wanting to travel with the team and commit for all those months of grind. Maybe he would be good at it, but I can't imagine he would be inclined to commit to the season.

he will show up to Spring Training each year and be a "special advisor". spend a month with the boys in sunny florida.

not a chance he spends 162 games as a coach (head/batting/bench/whatever)

He's what is needed, a born leader. He has proven that from the day he arrived from the Twins, added to it with his CENTER FIELD SPEECH and right on through his unbelievable 2016 season. I'm not talking about key home runs, etc. I'm talking about his availablility to Bogaerts, Betts etc.. Was their 2017 performances due to the missing Ortiz. You can bet on it!!!

Maybe after a year or two more out of the game he'll feel differently. Sometimes retirement gets a little boring and a new challenge is needed.

I know he had a major problem with a totally f*** FO in Seattle.

Did he actually have a stroke?

Yes, I looked that up and there are a couple notes in the web regarding that

At the very least he could be one of those ex-Sox consultants in ST and maybe more.

Yikes. Thanks for the info. I did not know that.

He was a customer of mine and I saw him work with young players many times. He is a very good teacher of the game and a solid person.

That is why I am partial to him.

He was a good manager, and looks like a better guy.
