Yes, there is a Devers thread. It''s NOT too early for a comparison thread. What got me started was finding the stats that say 6' 195 lbs. FOR BOTH DEVERS AND FOXX!

Stats from the 1939 season. (please excuse typos. I have s “slight’ eyesight problem)

In 1939 Jimmie Foxx played in 124 games for the Red Sox. He hit .350 with 35 HR and 105 RBI

In 1939 Ted Williams played in 143 games for the Sox. He hit .327 with 31 HR and 145 RBI

In 2017 Raphael Devers has played in 16 games for the Sox He is hitting .339 with with 6 HR and 12 RBI

Foxx and Devers are both 6’ and 195 lbs. They look alike even with different nationalities.

WHICH ONE WILL DEVERS COME CLOSEST TO (or exceed)

BTW Iwas born in 1924. Foxx played his first game with the Sox when I was 11 years old. His last for the Sox) when I was 17. I think I saw him play more than I did Williams! (I lived in Somerville)

I thought that both Bogaerts and Betts would be more convincing hitters than they presently are, but Devers might be different. For one, he's a power hitter, and yes, he does have that Foxx grounded, unflappable, established kind of looks and body structure. And he may be even more of a season saver than was Bogaerts in his first couple months.

Wow, 1924. Now that's what I call baseball memory.

great post Mal. if the kid has a career even remotely close to those 2 you mention i will be THRILLED.

it will be fun to watch him grow the next handful of seasons.

Found some short videos that do show Foxx's swing. I wish I could paste it beside Devers swing/I used to think they all looked alike.

I'm just glad that you are posting. For me, the simple historical value of the things that you write are very significant. Seeing is believing in my book. I have read about how great Foxx was and i did appreciate how good Williams was but I saw none of Foxx and not much of Williams. Bobby Doer or Dustin Pedroia - who are you going to go with?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS. i REMEMBER SOME THINGS BECAUSE OF SOME EVENT. lIKE MY FIFTH BIRTHDAY IN 1929. i GOT "LOST" IN A SNOWSTORM ON cHRISTMAS eVE! (nOW WHERE THE HELL IS TTHAT STUPID CELL PHONE?)

Doerr or Pedroia? Tought camm, but Doerr because of his power. He probably won more games with his bat than Pety has saved with his glove.(Sorry about the capitalizing. Most of the time I don't know what I've written until I'm finished and haul out the almost usless 2X glass!

I'll try and be more carefull next time!

Very interesting observations, Mal.

However, it will be quite revealing how Devers will do for a full season in 2018, particularly after pitchers have probed for his weak spots, if any.

And with those stat guys and their charts showing a batter's proficiency in each section of the strike zone, and the how he handles each type of pitch, and the part of the field where he's most likely to hit the ball, it doesn't take long for opposing teams to get a 'book' on a player. So I wouldn't start measuring him for a bronze bust in the HOF just yet.

So until Devers shows me that he can 'adjust' I'll reserve judgement in comparing him to Foxx. Now Williams is a whole different story. I saw quite a bit of Williams back in the day. And this kid has a long, long, long ways to go before anyone can reasonably compare him to 'the greatest hitter who ever lived'.

You just keep writing - don't worry about what it looks like. Most of us can figure it out. I was kind of thinking Doerr. It is probably a good thing for Pedroia that he can be mentioned together with Doerr.

I don't think he was comparing the player so much as comparing the swing and body type.

Ah, I get it. Her's a short video of Bobby Doerr's swing with a short narrative''

Case in point: Aaron Judge had such a Ruthian first half, and then he hasn't been able to make the adjustments in the second half.

Sure, anything's possible. His basebll instinct, however, are off the charts. His pop flys carry 320 ft, and he looks strong as an ox. He'll have "slumps" (just as Foxx and TW did) and there will be pitchers who give him trouble. But, all in all, I'd say his chances of being a "super-star" ae a lot better than even money.

I was against this thread as soon as I saw the title. Talk about jumping the gun!

But I'm actually for it after reading bosoxmal's OP and because Devers seems to have such vast potential. Yes, modern technology will help pitching coaches figure the best way to pitch to him, but so far he clearly can hit fast balls and seems comfortable with breaking pitches as well and seems to know the strike zone. Plus, unlike Foxx, he hits from the left side, which helps in a righty pitcher universe. I'm no doubt wrong, but I think his swing is more ruthian than foxxian. Devers is actually older than Foxx and Ruth when they came up and about the same age as Williams.
