Rob Whalen will become the 12th pitcher to make a start for the Seattle Mariners this young season.

The Mariners headed to Spring Training with a projected starting rotation of Felix Hernandez, James Paxton, Hisashi Iwakuma, Drew Smyly and Yovani Gallardo but all except Gallardo are on the disabled list. The other four projected starters have combined for only 17 starts in the first 49 games.

Eight Red Sox pitchers, including Brian Johnson, have made starts this year.

I thought JBJ may have set the tone for Friday night's game with his throw to 2B early in the game. If that play's not successful the M's have runners at 2nd & 3rd with nobody out. That's a lot different from having a runner on 3rd with one out. From there on in the M's seemed to be looking for a way to lose. Wild pitches and balls fumbled in the OF simply should not happen in MLB and without those plays we've got a 1-1 tie on our hands. I know I keep saying this, but DEFENSE is really important! The impact of poor defense isn't always evident in the box score so we tend to overlook it.

The good news for the M's is that their players are better than that. I know that because if they aren't better than that they wouldn't be in Major League Baseball. The Sox certainly have kicked away their share of games this year and I was very concerned that 3B defense was going to be our Achille's Heel, costing us game after game. Fortunately Marerro is there filling that gap and keeping our opponents from scoring multiple unearned runs.

I haven't seen any M's games this year other than Friday night's game but that team isn't as bad as they played last night. They just need to get their heads out of their asses, make the routine plays, and believe in themselves a bit.

Pedroia runs the bases like a clown.

Yea, I don't get it. He consistantly is making mistakes on the bases.

Probably a failure to realize how much speed he's lost. He used to be a good base runner.

That makes sense.

I use to be faster too!

Damn would it be nice to get a good game from Johnson!

We need that 6 starter we can count on.

Was Hanley given the green light or did he just do something stupid?

I have my fingers crossed for Johnson.

So far, so good.

He did run through the stop sign. But watching the replay, WHY DOES THE 3B coach come down the line and wave his arm frantically signaling to run for the 3B runner. I've seen it before. It's confusing.

3b coach should simply focus on the runner on 2B. Not an excuse but .......................

There was an article recently about running and Pedroia was rated the worst on the Sox.
