The money who cares - but the years is more important. A 4 year commitment to any reliever is hard to stomach.

Great point. After all, when the Yanks signed Miller he was just two years removed from this:

5.54 ERA/ 1.815 WHIP (12 starts/ 5 RP'er outtings) in 2011.

Yes, you've described the only valid reason why relievers are paid less than starters. Good job. Now, what does that have to do with the fact that a rising tide is floating all boats, including those of relief pitchers? Not too bloody well much.

There's more money and more demand in baseball than ever and salary prices will reflect that. Relievers deserve their share of the pie. Basic economics. The relievers you talk about rarely make more than league minimum anyway, the ones that get paid are the guys who *have* shown some consistency.

(I do agree that the years are more important when it comes to RP. But that has nothing to do with the salary component per se).

Not really - they just don't create as much value ... and they are easier to make (since almost all of them are failed starters - like Miller and Wade Davis)

Would anyone trade 32-year-old starter Clay Buchholz, who is owed $13.5 million in the final year of his contract, for Falmouth native Steve Cishek, the 30-year-old Seattle reliever who is owed $6 million in the final year of his contract?

This year Buchholz posted 0.5 fWAR while Cishek posted 0.9 fWAR. FanGraphs Depth Charts project 2017 fWAR of 1.7 for Buchholz and 0.8 for Cishek.

Cishek could be an eighth-inning candidate with Carson Smith, another reliever who did not hold down the closer's role in Seattle.

I'd think about it.

We really need the SP'er depth though. I'd be scared to death with Johsnon & Owens as our 6 and 7.

I have been scared about that pair as depth for 2 years.

Is Workman a dead issue now? Has his window closed?

I'd put Elias ahead of Workman, but maybe Workman can finally get healthy.

I would like to sign R.Hill but I guess there is no room for him and he is an injury prone pitcher.

I presume this will be the Red Sox's starting staff next year:

D.Price

R.Porcello

D.Pomeranz

S.Wright

E.Rodriguez

With Buchholz in the bullpen (and the 6th starter). Johnson and Owens in AAA. I would be surprised to see Buchholz in the rotation over Wright. Wright earned a rotation spot based on his 2016 performance and will likely be in a Red Sox uniform for a longer duration than Buchholz who is set to be a free agent after the 2017 season. And Buchholz pretty much took a crap in the bed when the Red Sox needed him to come up big in the postseason.

I would have been tempted to decline Buchholz's option and then sign R.Hill to a 2 or 3 year contract. On the other hand, the Red Sox already have 3 lefties in the starting rotation.

We could trade Buch or Pom.

Can't see trading Pomeranz or Buch this season. Pitching depth is becoming everything. Cleveland are World Champs if their roto was healthy. None of these younger pitchers to get big-league starts over the past couple seasons have been very good; E-Rod aside. We may have traded away our best SP prospect in the Pom deal.

My statement was made in reference to the idea of signing Hill first.

i would not willingly trade Pomeranz' issues for Hill's issues and even Buchholz may be more durable next year considering how much younger he is than Hill

Lots of talk about going after Holland for RP. It appears DD is headed in that direction rather than one of the top 3 out there.

I think he's a good gamble, but at what cost?

We already have Carson Smith coming back, so I worry about too many recovering players.
