And Panda goes to 3b and Shaw to LF? Or Panda is replaced by Castillo?

Panda can be replaced by Castillo, or even Young himself if he pulls him back before he reaches the batter's box.

I believe if Young's name is announced (not if he reaches the batters box) you can't bring him back. Why would Tito switch to Joba before Young's name being announced?

I've seen managers pull this before, but I guess they have the pinch hitter in the ODC and switch him up when the pitcher's announced. I honestly did not know the rule. Still, I would have given that AB to Panda if he came in with Joba to counter Young.

So you'll go through 3 bench guys (Young to Panda to Castillo) for one AB in the middle of the game? This could have made sense in the 8th or 9th inning, but not that early in the game with the Sox already holding a lead.

People complain about managers not making enough moves, but fans tend to want to make moves just for the sake of making moves. Personally, I'd rather stick with Holt than needing to put Castillo in LF for the final 4 innings of a game.

I personally think that if it's a timeshare, he should treat it as such. Panda and Castillo need to play too. We can agree to disagree here.

I agree, but I don't believe they need to come in every game. They'll have their turns. I just don't think this is the best example to state that Farrell messed up by not pinch hitting.

So you bring Young in and the Guardians bring in Joba. Would you then bring in Castillo to hit for Young?

Now, the Red Sox also had Swihart (switch-hitter but so far much stronger from the left side) and Bradley behind Holt. Would Tito have gone for the matchup when there were multiple "lefties" left afterward? At least in that particular situation.

Joba's wOBA vs righties was .368 last year ... Detwiler's against lefties was .299. Given that it is game 1 of 162 (the same reason you could argue for Holt staying in against the lefty) might as well let Young take a righty on righty turn and then go to LF.

As noted - it's not a big deal - to me it's more of a 60-40 than something scandalous. But it probably slightly reduced their chances of really adding to that lead.

That's too much thinking for Farrell. His head would hurt just from reading your post.

Of course as I always seem to point out, Farrell may have info that fans do not have. I really doubt that he completely missed the opportunity.

I think he has the info, but is generally slow to react. He's not known as a good in game manager. Even his buddy Schilling thinks it's not something he's great at.
