I'm making the thread now. I'm going out later, and I'm not sure if I'll be back in time for the game. So, here we go.

It's safe to say that in the eyes of many, the Oakland Athletics will always be known as The Moneyballers, or just Moneyball. Billy Beane will forever be confused with Brad Pitt. But that's okay. This year, the system is not working out well. The team is mediocre, and buried in "50 feet of crap" (as he says in the movie) below the rest of the AL West (except Seattle). They got rid of everybody that meant anything to them: Donaldson, Cespedes, Lester, Samardzija, Moss, Norris, you name it. Now, they are left with Lawrie, Vogt, and Reddick, as well as a bunch of young no names that can't do jack s*** just yet, including Marcus Semen.

Not only is the team mediocre, their Moneyball methods are now mediocre. Have you heard of the way in which the Sox scouted Mookie? They showed up at his high school, took him out of his lunch period, and had him take a diagnostic test to see if he was mentally prepared for big league situations. So, yeah, let's go.

RHP Jesse "Not the guy they named Chavez Ravine after" Chavez (2-5, 2.11) vs RHP Broseph Kelly, Jr. (1-4, 5.83)

The plight of Oakland does not refute the principles of Moneyball, since there is nothing in the book to say that these principles can make up for more than a 2x difference in payroll. It's going to be difficult to compete with a team that spends more than twice what you do no matter how foolishly that team may use its resources (and of course, there are teams that do not spend wisely--shocking as of course this may seem to contributors on this board!)

There's also nothing that says more money means less mistakes.

It's simply easier to recover from them.

If GMing a team was easy, even for a large payroll team, the know-it-alls here would be doing it.

Not only are we winning today's game, but we are going to sweep this series, bringing with it our first 3-game win streak since early April.

You heard it here first!

Thunder mojo will not be denied!

I just don't understand why some of us are still sitting in our armchairs.....

Because they are so comfy.

I'd like to think the same thing, ma'am.

Thunder Mojo = 20 game winning streak?

Let's see it happen.

If it does, it's your fault that we were in last place last year, with that bet we made.

Wasn't the Oakland series the last series we actually won?

Wooo hoooo . . . . we found a team we can beat......... . . let's double down on these losers.....

No, we won the Angels series thanks to my in-game mojo.

Is this a tryout game for Kelly. If he is bad, is he gone?

Gotta think he's already the odd man out when the rotation goes back to 5 next week.

That remains a very interesting question. I assume that you mean will he be sent to the pen as many here believe is best.

The Sox rotation is still kind of a big question overall despite very good performances over the last two or more weeks.

What will happen with Masterson? Steven Wright? ERod?

Personally, I kind of like the idea of putting Kelly in the pen where he can just come in and fling 4 seam fastballs all the time and may become dominant. He does have some really useful stuff.

One mark of good management is how well they utilize the talent that they manage. What they do in the next few weeks will be fun to watch.

You're right it should be interesting. Bucholtz, Porcello, Miley, Rodriguez and a big ? Kelly to the pen for sure I hope. Wright has done a decent job. I just wonder what they are going to do with Johnson. Doesn't throw as hard as ER but his work at Pawtucket has been top of the charts. I think that he deserves a shot if he is healthy. It makes no sense at all to leave the guy who has had the best start of them all in the minors.

Yes, it is. This start will likely determine whether he or Wright goes to the BP.

Nice.... a lead.....

I'm pretty sure me talking smack about Hanley made him mad so he hit a homerun. Thank me later.
