If a $9 million AAV player fails it's not great but it's not going to kill you either.

And if he falls off a cliff in 2015 which would not be unusual for a 40 year old, they would have a $9 million sunk cost in 2016. I would have increased the AAV in 2015 to something like $11 or 12 million and taken a club option for $ 8 million for 2016. I would consider a player option for $ 8 million if he pitches more than 60 innings in 2015.

A 2 year contract for a 40 year old is never a good idea regardless of the AAV.

Your deal proposal is a reasonable one. You could look at the actual deal as 12 million for Year 1 and 6 million for Year 2.

no you cannot. The team is committed to $18 million. You could look at it as 1 year for $ 18 million if he blows up like 40 year olds are apt to do.

Well one way or another he is a better risk than the two sure fire stoppers that the Sox had signed before Koji began his role of closer.

Hanrahan and Bailey (?) accomplished nothing while with the Sox. Except for cashing their big paychecks.

In most cases I would fully agree with you Ted. Two years for any player, especially a pitcher, over 40 is kind of stupid.

But in this case the player comes with a very good recent background of success and presumably good health. The way the bargaining agreement is set up he was due to get a big increase one way or another. He certainly got it with a 100% increase in pay!

I hope that Koji is productive in 2015. If he falls off of a cliff for 2016 so be it. It will just be another example of what happens when older players are signed to multi-year contracts ( Shilling and Victorino come to mind ).
