Ravens release Ray Rice amid elevator video falloutBy Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.comSeptember 8, 2014 2:23 pm ET

The Ravens have released running back Ray Rice hours after TMZ posted the surveillance video showing Rice punching his soon-to-be wife, Janay Palmer, in an Atlantic City hotel elevator last February.

Rice can be seen punching Palmer in the face, knocking her out cold, before dragging her limp body out of the elevator. Everyone -- fans, media, politicians, former players -- has expressed outrage on every available medium -- television, radio, internet, social media -- at not only the failed legal system, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Rice's team, the Baltimore Ravens.

In July, the NFL suspended Rice for two games, a decision that was widely criticized. A month later, Goodell, in a letter to owners announcing a new domestic violence policy, admitted that he got Rice's punishment wrong.

"I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values. I didn't get it right. Simply put, we have to do better."

Less than two weeks after Goodell's admission, TMZ released the surveillance video that neither the league nor the Ravens said they had seen previously. But because the NFL had already disciplined Rice, the collective bargaining agreement could prevent the Ravens from leveling additional sanctions.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported Monday afternoon that, according to Article 46 of CBA, a player can only be disciplined once -- by either the commisioner or the team -- for the same act or conduct. Which means that, in light of the league suspending Rice for two games.

The Ravens got around that by releasing Rice outright.

Rice met with the media in late July, shortly after training camp opened, and was asked if he was prepared to meet the criticism he would likely face.

"I'm prepared for the worst but that's something I've brought upon myself," he said at the time. "I have my teammates, my wife, my family, people close to me who will help me through this. ... I know that I love kids, that I love helping people, and that I will be an ambassador against domestic violence. ...

"That's who I'm doing to be as a person, that's who I'm going to be as a man. ... Domestic violence has no place in this world -- especially man on woman -- and I have to live with (that) the rest of my life."

A life that no longer includes professional football.

Good riddance you bum.

Good riddance you bum.

Someone was trying to cover Goodell's ass after he made that putrid call of a two game suspension for what was a violent attack on a woman. I would like to cut the guy's balls off, the filthy scumbag. Fortunately, the Ravens saved the commish's bacon by releasing the bastard. As 700 Hitter said, good riddance you bum.

I think that the Ravens and the NFL blew it big time in this matter.

They knew all along what Rice had done and only now after the release of the actual assault video have the Ravens dropped the guy.

So I have no "props' for the Ravens. They are a chickenshit organization in my eyes. Yes, I know that Rice has not been convicted of anything. Still.

I abhor violence. And anyone who lays a hand on any woman is a total coward and not a man. If anyone ever laid a hand on any woman that I cared about I would grab the closest blunt instrument and go all Standing Tall on the guy.

Hey, what was the name of the short term Red Sox 2nd baseman that hit his Wife? Will Cordeiro?

I'm also wondering how long it will be until another team signs the piece of crap? Greed rules. I bet the Raiders sign him no later than the off season and before camp in 2015.

I'm totally against giving him another chance in the limelight ( NFL ). I said similar things when Michael Vick was reinstated. Another sociopath that should be selling crystal meth instead of playing major league football.

NFL has suspened him indefinitely, he won't be signing anywhere.

Assuming the NFL has been truthful, how do you not view the videotape evidence before deciding on disciplinary action? Goodell screwed up and Yahoo for one was calling for his job today. The only thing now is to see if Rice fights the suspension in court, since he has already said he wants to "own" his actions.

Just saw the video. Loves how after knocking her out cold he drags her and dumps her on the floor. How is he not going to prison for this, again?

I'm not 100 percent certain, but in most cases, barring death or serious injury (beyond simply being knocked out), I think the victim has to press charges in order for prison time to be a possibility. I could be incorrect though.

if the attack van be verified without the testimony of the spouse, law enforcement can prosecute the case. It makes it very difficult to have a successful prosecution without the help of the spouse, because spouse can claim extenuating circumstance or that it was not an assault etc.

I have a feeling that being a professional sports player and a card-carrying multi-millionaire will factor into any legal decisions as well. It always seems to somehow. Maybe Ray Rice and Dante Stallworth can open a restaurant together or something. Or maybe a bar!

Goodell claiming he never received the tape. AP reporting that the NFL was given the tape. This is a huge PR issue, and Goodell might lose his job here.

You're right of course. And this woman MARRIED him afterwards. Battered wife syndrome in full effect.

And did you read or hear who is leading the investigating team? People with connections to that dipshit Goodell, one of the owners of the Ravens and a couple of lawyers who have had connections with the NFL for years. The press and media must not let up in their attacks. This has all the makings of a whitewash. Goodell has to go...PERIOD!!!!!!
