Nice game for Farrell huh? Yeesh.
He had such a confused look on his face when they were intentionally walking Ortiz. It was almost comical. He couldn't figure out where he'd gone wrong.

The team covered for him last season because if you followed the club closely you can recall numerous times Farrell made one bonehead move after another only to be bailed out by a clutch hit. This season his ineptness is showing through and through. Ask some of your friends up where you are about Farrell. They can give you chapter and verse about his major shortcomings.

This is what Farrell had to say:

• With Mike Napoli at the plate after a leadoff single by Yoenis Cespedes in the ninth, David Ortiz goes out to the on-deck circle to hit for Daniel Nava. Napoli hits an opposite-field double to right, Cespedes stopping at third. Farrell could have called Ortiz back to the dugout, knowing that the Cardinals would intentionally walk him. Why didn’t he?

Farrell explains:

"Recognizing full well that they might take the bat out of [Ortiz's] hands, but they'll probably pitch to Nava, with no guarantees," Farrell said. "And we’re into some right-handed hitters after that. We didn’t want to get in a situation where we left David on the bench if we don't get through that inning. We were limited with the opportunities for him. We couldn't pinch hit for another infielder. Will [Middlebrooks

He sounds as befuddled as he looked last night. Luckily, he doesn't manage in the NL or he would strain his brain.

Fred, sometimes it is better to be lucky than to be good, and last season, Farrell had a boat load of luck.

I'll admit I was too harsh on Joe Kelly because I was pissed at the trade of Lackey. However, this was still a National League start in a pitcher's park against the second lowest scoring team in MLB. I'll treat it the same as Buchholz's game against Houston: a good game but not an indicator of future success.

I still don't think he'll be very successful in the AL, but not nearly as bad as I was originally saying. If he keeps the ball on the ground and in the ballpark, he can get out of most trouble he creates, without having to get strikeouts. I expect an ERA around 4.50, which is ok for a back of the rotation guy.

So if Kelly is a back of the rotation guy and Craig does not recover from his fractured foot ( It happened last September, I have read ) then this trade is not a fair swap at all.

I have no way of telling if or when Graig will recover and start producing. But so far even with the good game by Kelly last night, this trade looks bad.

Of course it's too early to tell.

That's the key point. If Craig doesn't bounce back, Kelly is just back of the rotation guy, and Lackey pitches well for 500K, then yeah this was a very bad trade. If Craig can bounce back, I'm wrong about Kelly, and Lackey demands a new contract or pitches bad because he's grumpy, then this trade looks pretty good.

Bogaerts is turning a corner, mark my words. He absolutely crushed that double (that should have been caught). He is about to get really, really hot.

I've heard this a million times this year.

Spud, from what I've learned about you over the past year or so I have to believe with all my heart that you know what he said to be nothing more than a muddle of gobblydigook. The guy is as befuddled as a manager can be. What he said made no sense at all.

How many times have we hear that SFF? He turned so many corners he traveled from Boston to San Francisco. I admire your confidence in him and if you turn out to be right the kudos will be flying fast and furious your way and I will lead in doing that. OTOH, if he looks as muddled at the end of the season as he does now you will have to wipe the egg off your face without any help from any of us who right now are thinking otherwise.

Even if he is still muddled at the end of the season, he's 21 years old. He's up too soon, and it's way too early to give up on him.
