Is it time to give up on Peavy and Doubront in the Starting Rotation?

After last night's second in a row lop sided loss in Seattle it does look like the suggestion starting this thread will come to pass. Dubront was used in long relief and I cannot imagine them starting Peavy again. IMO the Sox better spend enough to get Lester back for next year as number one priority, and make enough of a serious play for Price to at least drive up cost for Yanks.

Question for members of the thread who know more about the trading rules than I: : Can the Rays pry young talent out of whoever gets Price or will it be just draft picks at issue? I am now pretty much giving up on this year and hoping Sox move to salvage next year as best they can.

The Rays are expected to trade Price for young talent.

What does Drew have to do with this thread?

And what does it really matter one way or another why X is slumping? It is happening and there is nothing that can be done by any of us to correct it.

Hopefully the Sox have a hitting coach that can help X.

Spud, we talk about the slump because we think it might be something serious-----a Josh Bard case with a position player. Eckersley said last night that he believes moving X to third to make room for the miserable slumping Drew might have shaken Bogey's confidence, and we cannot shake off that possibility especially when he has recently gone 5 for 52 and has made four or five errors at third. Personally I take Eck's position and have all along that Xander should be moved back to short, Middlebrooks called up and put on third permanently this season to see what he can do, and make Drew either a utility man or release him. He has no trade value whatsoever.

You will not see Xander at short, the front office already made up their minds for this year that Drew will hold that position. X might play their some games, but it's Drew's position. Back to the title of this thread, I would not mind seeing Peavy and/or Doubront traded for. As for Middlebrooks he's injury prone, he should also be traded for.

He had to go.

Red Sox Designate Chris Capuano For Assignment

By Steve Adams

[June 25, 2014 at 5:29pm CDT]

The Red Sox have designated left-hander Chris Capuano for assignment, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (on Twitter). The move makes room for right-hander Clay Buchholz to be activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Capuano, 35, signed a one-year, $2.25MM deal with the Red Sox this offseason that included up to $2.75MM worth of incentives. The veteran southpaw pitched 31 2/3 innings for the BoSox and posted a 4.55 ERA with 8.2 K/9, 4.3 BB/9 and a 36.2 percent ground-ball rate. Capuano posted a bizarre reverse-platoon split in Boston, holding right-handed hitters to a .217/.337/.348 batting line but struggling against lefties to the tune of a .333/.367/.509 triple-slash.

Capuano started the year well, pitching to a 1.95 ERA through the first two months, but he’s fallen on hard times in June. He’s appeared in five games this month, totaling just four innings while serving up a total of 10 runs on 14 hits and four walks.

Does anyone know if peavy is hurt or when his velocity exactly went to s***? I know he had a nice season in 2012 but I don't know if his velocity was better then or not. He can't locate anything now and can only reach 92 tops when he rears back.

Question:

Any ideas why the Sox don't:

1. Sign Lester.

2. Bring up Mookie Betts to the show and play him in C.F?

3. Start Lester, Lackey, Workman, de la Rosa, throw in Bucholtz after passable last start versus Seattle?

I am curious, just asking

1) Money.

2) Inexperience

3) Peavy's pride.

In order to get more then a bag of balls they have to get Peavy and Doubront pitching better. I think with so many teams still in the chase because of the extra wild card the closer we get to the deadline the more desperate teams get for SP. Peavy you can probably get a NL team to take him. Doubrount I think has more value because he is younger and a lefty. Need to get both pitching better to get any value though.

We are going to get nothing for half a season of a washed up pitcher no matter how he pitches in his upcoming starts. The best that they can hope for is for someone to take his remaining salary. As a fan, we will be rid of the torture of watching him stink and yell at himself.

This also opens up spots for the young arms a.k.a Workman, Dela Rosa, Ranaudo and Webster. If the Sox are what we have seen so far this year I rather see the kids pitching.

Regarding the post by Palodius above...Palodius may well be right but the implications of not forking enough money over to sign Lester are dire for Sox. I strengthen my argument on my post of 06 - 2 - 2014.

Say someone gets Price from the Rays for young talent plus. Then that team will face bidding for Price in fee agency in 2015 and unless maybe the Dodgers I don't think anyone will outspend the Yanks on this. And Sherzer, ditto. So the Yanks then have three Cy Young award winners in 2015 if Tanaka continues on his present pace. And the Sox will not even have Lester, and quite possibly the Yankees would have Lester instead. Then no matter how much hitting the Sox add they will be shafted for 2015 by the Yanks, IMO.

That would be a doomsday scenario.

It could, happen but I doubt it.

I think that the Yankees know that they will not get far this year and will build for 2015. I bet Lester is a Yankee by then. That will suck.

I know what you mean!

Still, it is the Sox front office that has the power and opportunity to prevent our players from defecting to the Evil Empire.

So if we see more migration toward N.Y. the blame should be directed towards them, not necessarily toward the Yankees.

It won't be a problem for me placing the blame on the front office because I have always put the blame right there where it belongs. We have some money coming off the books after this season and I repeat what I've said all along, start negotiations with Lester and start NOW, today, tomorrow, Monday. The Sox are trying to act like a mid-level team and they are not that. Henry is loaded and is a billionaire; he can afford to sign quality players if he doesn't sign any more Pierzynskis, Mujicas, Millers, Drews and Peavys. It might also be a good idea to check with their scouts more carefully to see that they do not over-hype their prospects because so far we haven't paydirt on any new Pedroias, Papelbons, Ellsburys, Youkalises or even a Buchholz at his best.

I have never been a fan who makes apologies or excuses for the FO. I tend to reject their excuses and explanations as propaganda spewed by suits.

If we lose Lester, I will not buy any of the excuses. It seems that most teams are keeping and extending their star pitchers. Most of those teams have less resources than the Red Sox. Those pitchers have agents too. Are we to believe that the Yankees covet only our star pitcher?

Agreed. The 2011-2012 experience did not mean that spending money is a bad idea. It just means that mistakes suck (and injuries suck). If this teams whines about cost like they are the Rays, it is quite distasteful. I think Lester gets done ultimately - he is a hard commodity to replace.
