And people wonder why our pythag is all f***ed up. When we get down by 6 or more, Girardi tries to get as much as he can out of his starter, then he throws in the scrubs until they burn out. When we lose, we lose big. When we win, we win close

Hallmark of s***** teams.

Or the hallmark of a team that's been doing this for 20 years my friend. We have outperformed our pythag for nearly 2 decades. And how is that a hallmark of a s***** team? That makes no inherent sense

That makes no inherent sense? Nice.

How is outperforming your pythag a hallmark of a s***** team? I'd really like to know that. They have done if for 20 years, with 5 titles to show for it. If that is s*****, I would LOVE to continue to be that s*****

Inherent sense of what?

Vidal Nuno goes out there and throws 5 shutout innings. That was pretty sweet. The kid was awesome last yr before tearing his groin, here's to hoping that continues as he is probably our 5th starter now

In July, I agree with you. But at the 19 game mark, one or two lopsided scores can swing a team's run differential sharply in either direction. Not sure that a bad (or good) run differential at this point in the season says much about a team.

This hasn't really been true under Girardi, aside from last year. In fact, there have been a couple years where they performed worse than their Pyth.

Not having vintage Rivera, and an owner who doesn't care about losing $100 million will put an end to that trend.

Did I hear correctly that Tanaka said in an interview that it would be possible to go 24-0in MLB?

Yeah, but all he said was that going undefeated is his mindset and admitting that it's impossible would be bad for him. He wants to have the attitude that he can/will win every time he takes the mound. Sounds like what you want out of a pitcher.

I remember hearing an interview with David Price when he was at Vanderbilt, and he said that every time he takes the mound he expects to throw a perfect game. I think that, as a pitcher, you have to have that attitude, even though you know going in that your goals are unrealistic.

I have no issue with what Farrell did. Big Mike forced his hand and he had to do something. But there's something pretty silly about a rule that everyone is ok with you breaking, but not ok with you breaking it out in the open. So here's to hoping that something good comes out of all this.

This is what I think is silly about all of this. No one has said he got a competitive advantage from cheating. No one has said that he was wrong for cheating. People are just complaining that he cheated in a way that was too obvious. LOL!!! The entire situation is ridiculous.

Farrel "had to do something because it was so obvious".

Off day is counted as a 'game'. More like he's suspended 10 days.

We're arguing a pretty minor point here, but I ain't losing it LOL

I looked it up on MLB.com. He can't pitch until May 5. It's 10 games, not 10 days. May 5 is a Monday, so that's 11 days.

Yes it's a little bizarro. You have to figure they'll make some sort of change in the rule.

Jacko ... I saw you mentioned that it looked like CC was throwing a ton of two seamers tonight. Figured I'd continue the conversation here, rather than in the Red Sox's game thread. That has been the trend all season. Coming into tonight only 30.1% of his pitches have been four seamers, while 27.4% have been two seamers. Last year it was 42.3%/14.9%. In his prime (2011) it was 45.3%/13.4%. He's even throwing a cutter this year, for the first time (2.2%). And it makes sense. He realizes he can't generate the velocity that he used to, so he's now going to be more reliant on movement.

I've seen his last start vs Boston and his start vs Toronto. I didn't remember seeing so much movement. It's a good thing, cause he's actually got a good two seamer. The one thing he must do is slow down the change, though. If you're throwing 88-89 with a 4 seamer and 86-87 with the 2 seamer, you can't be throwing 83-84 with the change.

I think what people are pointing out is that we only have to find a new starter for one game because of off days. Pineda will be pitching on May 5, so it's not that big of a deal
