Yankees offseason plans; $300 million shopping spree

I hope not. The good thing is, NY is apparently active on the 2b market. They've called Cincy about Phillips and are in on Infante.

They're busting Cano balls. Smoke and mirror. Cano is their off-season.

The Yankees had their worst offense in 20 years and they're letting go of a 40 Hr centerfielder and a MVP caliber 30 HR middle infielder? Doubt it.

Yes, they are. Granderson and Cano will likely eat up $40 mil per annum. We have C, 2B, SS, 3B, and OF to fill and we don't have a lot of wiggle room financially

When have the Yankees ever given more than a passing thought to 'financial wiggle room'? The only reason they don't wear uniforms studded with unnecessary jewels and threaded with platinum is because they'd look tacky.

I think they did last year, especially letting Swisher and Martin go and not replacing them with much. That was not the Yankee Way. They might get fed up with the thrifty s*** in a big hurry though.

This year is different for a lot of reasons and George ain't the boss anymore. Money matters to Hal. This is the year to reset that clock. Doing so drops them from an onerous 50% tax down to 0. It also gives them a revenue sharing rebate which, based on some reports, ranges from $50-$90 million. That's a ton of money. Once this year is over, they can spend like mad and by the time the lux tax rises to 50% again, they'll be out from under ARod, Jeter, Tex, and CC.

I don't think the revenue sharing rebate is quite that much but I could be wrong.

However much it is, keep in mind that the rebate is an annual thing so it will always be there as a disincentive to going over the $189 million.

50 million seems like a large amount of money, but after seeing Yankee Stadium completely empty on week night games it may hurt their profits more than help them. New Yorkers aren't going to know what to do with a losing team.

Letting Cano walk and avoiding another albatross right when the others are up is the right move. But it would take some wabos to do it. It's gonna be an interesting offseason all around the league

That's why they are going to put enough into the team for it to be competitive but not to the level we've enjoyed over the past 18 or so seasons. If we're a 85-88 win team and can get below the $189 mil threshold, then we'll be set up for a brighter future.

great job explaining it

I just wish it didn't make so much sense

can't knock them for wanting to do it

sales will definitely take a hit

I wonder how News Corporation feels about it and if they have a voice

That might work IF-----there are real quality free agents available for signing with your team. With more teams signing up and extending their young players the well might be pretty dank, and whether they are over the hill or not, replacing those four players won't be easy since they are still contributing players. Your farm system sucks right now and until it starts to show some of your prospects down there doing more than they have your team will be reduced to be a pack of gun slingers going where the money is. And get this---don't you or any Yankee fan tell me they are willing to let Cano walk. That can't and will not happen. He is your best player by far and to lose him would mean no matter what mercenaries you sign the Yankees will be worse off rather than better. You cannot and will not let Cano walk no matter what you have to pay him.

Bautista is apparently available. He's 33 and still has monster power and insane patience. He just hasn't been healthy since 2011. It would be strange for the Jays to sell low on this one, but it might not be that bad of an idea. If you can get Bautista of 2011 back, you've got a middle of the order thumper on a pretty reasonable contract

This is going to be a total mess if the report the Jays are boosting their payroll to 150M in 2014 are true. They could be the sleeper to snatch up Tanaka.

jacko, the Jays invested a lot into their team for 2013 and they can't blow it up just yet.
