Yeah? Ha ha...I don't really care about Crawford that much but I know how you feel. My vindictiveness seems to be focused on Iglesias. It's not even his fault. It's just that on the other forum there have been people complaining about the deal and saying we traded a great shortstop etc.

We did. And we got an expensive aging SP in return. that could very much could blow up in our faces, which is why you instinctively want to see Iglesias struggle to justify the trade.

I do think that we should have held onto Iggy, but the team wanted that big name guy. Hope losing a generational defensive talent at a very young age, who seemed to be handling the bat at an adequate level for a defensive shortstop, was worth a few years of a declining Jake Peavy. I really do. But I really doubt that it will turn out that way.

Yea I have had about all of the Iggy for Peavey "its a bad deal" talk I can take. If you come to terms with the fact that the Sox were always going to struggle with whether Iggy was a fit here or not, then it boils down to getting the best deal you can for him. There is just no way anybody would have thought you could get a front line pitcher for a guy that has yet to really prove himself as a ML SS. It is not like he has the potential to rip the cover off the ball. He has the potential to be a terrific defensive SS with a "tolerable" bat....thats it! I mean I love the kid and I could not muster up more enthusiasm than that for seeing Iggy in a Sox uni for a career. So not meaning to be malicious to Iggy, I was still happy to see him botch that play.

Jake Peavy is not a frontline starter. His ERA+ on the season is exactly 100. We got an average starter for Iglesias, and not even a particularly durable one.

At this stage in their respective careers, given their recent histories, I'd actually take Jeremy Guthrie over Jake Peavy and not think twice about it. At least Guthrie is durable and has a long track record of success in the AL East.

I would have preferred to keep Iglesias, use him as the utility guy next year, and had that depth option in case bogaerts or Middlebrooks (or both) had trouble, and to come up big in the inevitable half month one of the two of them (or both) is going to spend hurt.

At least though, you can say definitely that Peavy is an upgrade over Dempster -- an expensive one in both money and talent, but there it is, it wasn't zero net improvement.

They got Peavy for the post season. So far so good. If he wins game 4, it's another notch towards being a good trade.

Peavy this year was not great, quite a bit driven by the chest injury in the middle. Last year Peavy was a legit #2 who pitched 219 innings. Since he returned from his shoulder problems - he has not had to be babied largely. He - at this stage of his career - is a legit #3 sort of starter, which Guthrie (2 years older) until this last year and a half in Kansas City never has been. That allowed Dempster to move down to "at least we don't have to start Allen Webster" level which is valuable over a marathon.

Iglesias has shown this year that he ... PROBABLY ... can be an acceptable enough hitter to be a starter. If he is really just a utilityman, then trading a utility guy for a proven #3 starter is a trade you make every single day. If he can be a legit starter - then it is more of a calculated move, the Sox dealing from a position of strength to shore up a spot.

This team has won because their rotation has no soft spots. Let's put it this way - if Dempster is your soft spot in a 5-man rotation, that's pretty good.

The problem with Iggy and the Sox is the Sox would have always struggled being comfortable with Iggy. Even if they kept him, every time he had a slump they would be second guessing themselves. Iggy is an atypical Red Sox SS and as much as I like him, I just never saw the Sox willing to stick it out with Iggy. I many times said here long before the Peavey trade was even a twinkle in anybodies eye that Iggy was not long for a Sox uni. Once you come to terms with that, it boils down to what they could get for him and when they pulled the trigger.
