Part of becoming a really good pitcher and not just a thrower is not allowing the other team's big guns to beat you. That is why it is not unusual for a good pitcher to have some ugly dinger stats. He will take his chances with a slugger with nobody on base....may try some things to get him out that he will never try with even just one runner on base. But put a runner on base...same pitcher against the same slugger and said slugger gets nothing he can really drive anywhere.
