They keep saving all their bullets for the last three IP. They spend the first two thirds of the game swinging wildly then get patient in the 7th all of a sudden.

It is funny how lots has changed between this year and last but there was a time when the Sox were disciplined enough as hitters to maintain their offensive approach for entire games. Now I will grant you that the offensive approach they had with those powerhouse teams was different than the approach I think they should have now but they were uniformly patient and committed to a "team" offensive approach for entire games and for most games of an entire season. It has been a long time since the Red Sox have been that kind of team.

Taking last year out of the picture....this year they start with a sound offensive approach including being patient at the plate. They really start hitting an all cylinders when Ortiz comes back and they apply the same offensive approach now with that one/two punch that everybody wants in the middle of the order. Offense bananas at that point.

Then they all jumped off the wagon and the offensive approach changed completely. Some of them jumped off and started trying to solve their own individual problems...the wrong way I might add. Not surprisingly, they were no longer being patient at the plate as well with almost all of them jumping at pitches they should be ignoring or trying to foul off.

First I agree with UN on the lineup with one maybe two mods. I prefer Nava but either Carp or Nava have got to be in this lineup right now. Had all I can take of Mr Gomes. Hopefully being inserted at the top of the lineup Mr Vic will be convinced to go back to what he was doing at the start of the season. He would have been a perfect lead off hitter then and he has got to go back to that to be a perfect lead off hitter now.

Depending on who we are playing and who the opposing pitcher is, I might even try an outfield of Vic in Center with both Carp and Nava in the game, sitting Ells. Clearly there will be times when Ross will be the better choice at Catcher and I am sure UN knows that as well. This will not fix easily but Farrell has got to grab it by the throat NOW

Napoli IMO. His numbers are good. Just in a slump right now.
Napoli will get $13 million if he stays healthy. Overbay will make $1.25 million.

He carried the team for a while. But the slump has hit every hitter at the worst time.

At the moment it's no contest. Overbay looks like one of the best bargains in baseball. His main competition right now is probably Hafner.

I see your point. Napoli is earning it so far imo. Still too soon to tell.

Of course, Overbay will more likely than not return to the .710 OPS hitter he has been over the last three seasons. Let's be realistic.

Can't really say comparing Naps to Overbay makes any sense. Nobody would have been trying to weigh that alternative before the season. Those two players are not in the same place regardless of Overbay's performance to date. Should we have kept Overbay instead of Carp was where the decision was, not Overbay or Naps. From a value perspective even if he falls apart completely Overbay will likely look like a better value than Naps just cause nobody is paying Overbay anything.

He wasn't a fit for us. no one is asking that. He was our discard our trash and he is providing tremendous value to our arch-enemy. If Nava hadn't played so well, I would have been frosted that we didn't send Nava down and keep Overbay just to keep him from the Skanks. A blind man could see the Yankee move a mile away. They had no first baseman. He had no place on our team.

The Yankees could take any LHd hitter from most teams and make him a couple of notches better just playing in that stilted Yankee stadium. Besides, the Yankees insist on plate discipline. You don't swing at 1st pitches unless the ball looks like a grapefruit.

That, by the way, doesn't explain Wells. I suspect Wells has been drinking the same grape juice as Papi. But the media never questions the Yankees on such matters.

The Yanks were on the positive side of 3-2 game today while the Red Sox were on the negative side.

Farrell blew his game by taking Buchholz out at 101 pitches. Bochy kept Bumgarner in the extra inning and 112 pitches. The difference between the Giants and the pitch count obsessed Red Sox.

Buchholz was seen throwing a jar of bullfrog in the dugout after that Tazawa HR, which just missed Farrell.

Ellsbury scored his second run of the month this game on an error. He need to take a game off or hit 8th.

And nothing new, the Sox were 0-11 RISP this afternoon. Total s*** show.

Imagine a leadoff batter not scoring runs. And Farrell keeps him batting leadoff. When you start losing games, there are always good reasons.

That 9th inning was handled very poorly as well. You have absolutely got to tie the game at home before you try to win it. There are so many more ways to score from third than second with less than two outs. The Jays would have been forced to bring the infield in for one thing.

For all the talk of Farrell being intimidating to ballplayers generally and pitchers particularly so far at least he either does not see where this team is going (hard to imagine) or has not seen fit to try to redirect their efforts. I can see letting them have their heads all the way up to a point where he has given them so much rope that they have hung themselves. That team should have reached the end of that rope today. So if Farrell has been waiting for the right opportunity, I would say that this is it.

Napoli is awesome. Haters need to find the exit.

Ellsbury needs to turn on the power. What's with this guy? He's not even worth $10M/YR right now.

Middlebrooks returns... but the question is, will he keep this up vs. ANY OTHER TEAM (excluding the Astros)??

Nava > Gomes (I know that Grand Salami was awesome though)

Farrell's reasoning for letting Drew swing away was that Drew could advance the runner either by getting a hit or by hitting it on the ground to the right side.

Lol Overbay... You guys are funny. Funny how this board turns their back on players as soon as they get into a little funk.
