Which part of the Lakes Region are you on Ted? I was just in Wolfeboro the past year+ doing work in financial planning, but then I hated my job and the company I worked for so I left and am going to grad school in the fall. Nice area.

Had he not made the error, no runs would have scored and he would have been out of the inning.

You can never assume a double play.

You can't assume he wouldn't have gotten the third out afterwards, even if the DP had not been completed.

But he did make the error and then imploded. It wasn't as if the defense made a mistake and then he gave up some bs bloop hits/hole finders. He made the bad throw and then got SHELLED. The inning happened. I've always believed that if it's the pitcher that makes the error then the runs should be earned. It was 100% on Lackey.

Did you see the post mine was directed to? I wasn't defending Lackey for s***ing the bed, i was saying he wouldn't allowed all those runs had he not made the stupid error. I fail to see your point.

Well I think it probably does make sense to treat a pitcher's errors the same way as errors generally when discussing ERA because we have always used ERA as a means to discuss a pitcher's pitching performance as opposed to his overall performance as a player.

This is a slippery slope anyway. We don't treat a hitter's intentional passes differently than walks he earns by being selective. There are traps like ERA and pitcher's fielding performance all over baseball.

Would people prefer that ERA be more of a measure of a pitcher's performance as a player? Maybe that is where the discussion of that specific topic should be.

Looks like we're going to miss Morrow on Sunday. He's getting scratched, and Chad Jenkins is taking his place.

Chad Jenkins has never pitched in AAA, but has experience in the MLB last year to a 4.50 era over 32 IP.

According to Brooks Baseball, he throws about 92 mph with a 4 sm, 2 sm, Cutter, Slider, and change.

Terrible K numbers (4.5 per 9 at MLB level) and 5.9 in minors (5.4 above A ball).

JA Happ, Josh Johnson on the DL for extended periods of time. Morrow scratched. Dickey and Buerhle struggling big time. Romero seems like he's just about done.

I'm starting to feel sorry for them. Their 140 million dollar shortstop is on the DL, they sabotaged their team's future, trading away four top 100 prospects (three of which in the 50 range). And you know what? They're 10 games back on the division... which wouldn't be a huge problem this early, but they're 10 games back on three different teams.

Weren't you saying a couple months ago that they gave up "very little" to acquire the Marlins players and Dickey?

They took a shot. They have been waiting on prospects for years prior to this and their team went into the toilet and their fans abandoned them. They did succeed in temporarily improving their attendance. That could reverse if they don't improve their play.

As for ruining their future, the best prospect that they traded was the catcher who was stuck behind Arencebia. The other were not all that. If nothing else, they have a great young great dynamic Shortstop who will be with them for a few years. I think some Sox fans were surprised at the way he dismantled us in our first series against the Jays. I was not, because I have seen a lot of him with the Mets. He is a great player.

They didn't just give up good prospects, they gave up a ton of prospects/players, of which a few of them were good, and they took on a s*** load of money for a large amount of years. If these guys (Buerhle/Johnson and maybe even Reyes) are injured or playing like this for the rest of their contracts, Toronto is in a lot of trouble.

It doesn't look good for them right now. Johnson was a high risk proposition due to his injury history. Dickey was high risk due to the inconsistency of knuckle ballers. Melky was a risk due to PED performance. Reyes and Buehrle were supposed to be the low risk reliable guys. Reyes is on the shelf and Buehrle is s***ing himself. If those guys don't play to career norms, it will get ugly for the Jays.

Keep in mind that Lackey's ERA is only that low because of the throwing error on Thursday.

I agree with you though. This staff is looking solid, and they should be able to pick up a good 5th starter at the deadline. I personally like Samardzija, but Theo's not giving him up.

Do any of our statheads know the correlation between 1 point of fielding percentage and runs scored?

As much of a mess as the Sox were in 2012, there would not seem much that could compare to how this has gone for the Jays.

I can remember that first series of the year thinking how utterly detached this team seemed, how uninvolved..... asleep really it seemed with Reyes the only guy producing and THEN everything went sideways.....However it was very much like they knew it was all going to go sideways and they were just waiting for stuff to happen. Never have seen anything quite like that before
