Whether Taz or Ueh, I agree that I don't want to see Bailey there. In truth he has gotten that FB up a number of times this year. I don't think it is up out of character as much as the scouts are on to him and they are just sitting FB on a FB that has lots of juice but is not doing very much and is up in the zone.

It's flat...up, and flat.

Have we had any clean saves this year? You know, ones that don't make you reach for the Imodium? I think we had one against the Guardians...

I mean, it's nice that we usually end up winning, so far, but you're right, iortiz, we need someone who can get it done pretty much every time, and painlessly most of the time.

So great to have Papi back especially today of all days!

He got right in the groove, too. Excellent ABs all day.

Well we had one, but decided we'd rather sign Carl Crawford than pay for a top quality playoff proven closer.

There is no reason to pay 40-50 mil over 4 years to a reliever.

It depends on how much you really, really like the taste of antacid.

Won't pay for elite relief, don't get elite relief. Simple as that.

Why not if he puts the numbers every year. You already paid him 12 M/y.

He is arguably the best closer in baseball these days. As I said, gems cost. He is an ace. Period.

Tell that to the Braves, Cardinals, Giants and all of the other teams with elite closers making league minimum. This is the textbook definition of failthought.

No he isn't. The best closer is in Atlanta making league minimum. That's exactly the problem.

The Rays hardly paid for Fernando Rodney. Or the Orioles with Jim Johnson. It's an overrated position that isn't worth a huge chunk of payroll. I'm not giving 10 million to a guy who only throws 70 innings a year.

We have him. His name is Kojji Uehara, and all he requires from us is a human sacrifice. I keep saying we should use Andrew Miller, but no one listens to me....

Craig Kimbrel, Sergio Romo, Motte (Tj aside) and the list goes on and on.

Nahhhh. He is already proved in your environment for a long time plus durability. The other guy is a kid. A good one but still a kid.

We've got good relief this year. Like, really good relief. We just need someone who can pitch the 9th as well as he can pitch the 7th.

I'm just throwing crud out here because I don't really know as much about baseball as many of you, but is Morales a possibility when he gets back? I know he's got swing-and-miss stuff, but does he have what it takes to go get three tough outs in the ninth?

Yup. I loved Papelbon but not enough to throw the kind of cash he got at him.

Craig Kimbrel is, without contention, the nastiest f***ing reliever in baseball. He K'd 116 guys out of the bullpen last year.

This is a ******** argument. Numbers are numbers. While Boston is a harsh environment, talent wins out over "environment" every time, and there are several closers out there who are more talented than Papelbon making league minimum.

You'll never admit it because you have a raging boner for the guy that borders on unhealthy, but it's the truth.

Let's get A-Rod for the ceremony too just to be sure. Plus anyone on the Yankees who is over 40 years old and inexplicably has multiple home runs this year.

 have argued a lot about this. We'll see Pap's numbers at the end of his contract and see who was right.

Username. Username will be right.

Because Craig Kimbrel is disgustingly awesome.

C'mon man! How can you compare a kid with Pap. Do not take me wrong, I like the kid, but u just can't put in the same line his name with Pap. Kid has to prove the same for 7yr in a row. If so, we can talk, no before.

You're right. We can't put them in the same league. Kimbrel is far better.

Paps is a dead horse. No sense in continuing to beat it.

I don't mind a guy not going completely clean in the ninth. I don't need completely clean. I just don't need to see hitter after hitter coming to plate knowing exactly what to expect and knowing that what they can expect is something they can hit. You know what you are going to get from Rivera for example but you can't hit it. Actually I have not seen Rivera enough to know if that is what he is this year as well.

Not saying there are multiple Rivera' s out there cause there are not. But you either have to be unhittable if you are predictable...Rivera with two strikes for example or you have to be a little unpredictable....maybe Rodney with that FB that seems like it is moving a foot combined with his cutter for example.

Paps for his part has that FB that does move until he gets overused. Then it flattens out on him. Bailey's does not move that much and when it is up...watch out. Hanrahan's seemingly moves after he has thrown seven or eight. But he seems pretty vulnerable until he has gotten a few under his belt.

If you are going to be Bailey you have to depend on hitters coming to the plate that cannot hit a FB that is up and flat that they were expecting. I don't care how hard you are throwing it, if it is up and flat, most ML hitters are going to tag it if they are expecting it. That is in part why they are in the ML.

I am hoping Hanrahan takes the time he is getting to heal and to get it figured out. Ya' don't get seven or eight pitches to get straightened out in the AL East as a closer. Until then, I might choose Taz over Ueh for the reasons I stated earlier. Love the way Ueh throws cold water on rallies.
