Probably, but the longer they wait, the more he costs. Do you think he'd accept a 4/60 contract in 2014 if he continues pitching to career averages?

Why would he cost more in 2 months? That doesn't make sense. So he'd give a discount now, but not later?

Just let him play out the season and actually earn his $. It's not like 2012 never happened.

Uehara should close for the next few games. I really like Bailey in the 8th inning/being the guy to put out the fires.

Uehara doesn't walk anyone and has K's 10+ per 9.

Hanrahan needs to get into some low leverage situations and get his confidence back. He was aiming bad today rather than throwing the baseball.

Lester was great. 7 IP, 1 ER, not sure on the K's

Hanrahan 0 IP, 2 BB, replaced by Uehara in the 9th who got all three outs.

I wish we could have gotten that win for Lester because he pitched great ball for us again, but it is great to win the games he does pitch whether he gets the "W" or not. We will have to win the vast majority of the games he pitches if we want to make some hay this season and the same goes for Buchholz.

Farrell did two things today that makes him a star in my eyes. Unlike FrancoMa he didn't keep to the same rotation regardless of the rainout yesterday. He skipped over and let Jon pitch in his proper rotation and, secondly, he got Hanrahan's fat ass out of there before he blew the duke for us sky high. Good win---but I still think we're going to have to hit more. Come on Papi, make it back as fast as you can.

Hanrahan needs some time off closing. They should rotate the closer. Cripes, they got 3 other guys who can close--Uehara, Bailey, Tazawa. Rotate 'em. Don't lean too hard on one.

Ells picked a good spot to finally steal a base at home. Use that speed, Farrell.

SoxSport, I don't like this closer by committee stuff because some pitchers have a comfort zone and to rotate might throw them off their routine. I will totally agree with you that Hanrahan needs some time off, only a helluva long time off. We need a new closer. Today was proof positive of that. Let Bailey close for awhile. Hanrahan might not get his job back.

I think the point about Lester being surrounded by coaches that care about him and know him is a good one. A poor or less than optimal environment does not suit him. Some guys can fight past that. Some can't or at least don't well. I think he would want to stick with this bunch of coaches and would make a conscience choice to stay here as long as the coaches ere here.

"closers" are overrated. a lot of people can do what "closers" do. but the term Closer By Committee freaks people out.

He did!

“We had a real good opportunity to steal a base. Not just because of Jake’s base-stealing ability. But it felt like the combination there was something we might be able to take advantage of,” Farrell said.

The story today is Hanrahan tweaked his hammy in NY. So he's been pitching with a bad hammy? I don't know why, with 3 other guys who can close. Cost them a game.

The problem with one closer is they inevitably get overused--and then they blow a save and cost you a game. You lock in on one guy, he never gets a rest. These guys aren't machines. You can't throw them out there every day and expect them to be sharp every time. OK to have a principal closer, but you need a backup to spell the closer when you have too many consecutive save ops. Bochy does that in SF. The Red Sox have the luxury of 4 guys who can close, but you don't want to overuse any one of them.
