Hmm, you are correct, I guess they must have collapsed towards the end because they were a lock to do it. I must have stopped following when they had a good record and missed the nose dive.

 

They finished 79-83 last year and their last winning record was 96-66 in 1992.

 

They made it to the NLCS 3 years in a row at that point losing to the Reds in 1990, and the Braves in 1991-1992.
