Moran is the only player I've seen going to the Red Sox in more than one recent mock draft. Assuming Appel, Gray and Bryant are off the board, the only players left that really excite me are Frasier, Meadows and Shipley. Not a whole lot of quality talent this year.

BTW, I LOVE the recent mock by Jonathan Mayo for the Yankees. He has the Yankees getting HS C Jon Denney, HS LHP Rob Kaminsky and JuCo SS Tim Anderson with their 3 picks in the first round. Denney is a big bat whose defensive questions have seen him slide into the late 1st. I had seen him as high as #10 in the mocks. Kaminsky is a local HSer with perhaps the best curve in the entire draft. Add that to his low 90s heat and you have to wonder if he lasts as long as he is anticipated to last. And Anderson is a SS I have seen in the late 1st round as well who is markedly athletic and has a good bat, but a raw glove

That's pretty cool, thanks for the link. If indeed the draft does go Appel, Gray, Bryant, Frazier, Moran and Meadows the Sox would still do pretty well to pick up Shipley.

It would be really surprising if Denney falls to the Yankees, does he have signability issues? Kamiskey seems like a bit of a gamble that high, I've seen him going 15-20 spots later. Anderson seems about right. Austin Wilson would also be an interesting guy in the Yankees range. He's got some minor health issues but the main reason he'll fall in the draft is because he plays for Stanford.

Callis had this to say on the Red Sox pick.

"Boston has selected this high just once since 1967, getting Trot Nixon with the No. 7 choice in 1993. The Red Sox are looking to maximize their opportunity and will take a high-ceiling talent such as Frazier, Manaea or Stewart. They’re also interested in sweet-swinging North Carolina third baseman Colin Moran."

Both Callis and Jonathan Mayo have the Sox taking Frazier with their pick.

Shipley would be more of a consolation prize. But Keith Law, Callis and Mayo had Shipley going between 5th and 8th overall.

Did anyone else see "Sweet singing Caroline" ?

Sean Manaea's injured, that should make the decision a little easier for the Sox. He was one of their more likely candidates but his stock had been falling prior to the shoulder tightness.

Frazier, Moran and Shipley seem like the three players most likely to be drafted by the Red Sox. That is, of course, assuming that a higher regarded prospect doesn't fall to 7th.

It isn't looking like Moran or Frazier are falling to you. Manaea was the wild card who was slotting into the top 6 or out of the top 10. Now that he is going to move back in the draft, I highly doubt those talents fall to you
Posted
Huh? Tons of experts are predicting the Red Sox will select Moran or Frazier. Moran seems the most likely to me, he's ranked right around seven on most reputable mock drafts.

I haven't seen Manaea in the top 10 in many mocks since his hip injury/control issues earlier in the year. I doubt this affects the talent that will be available to the Red Sox.

In all fairness, Chamberlain would probably be a superstar reliever about now had they not jerked him around between starting and relieving once he came up. Just like Daniel Bard.

Their "Joba rules" ruined him for life. Thing is, he was a lights out starter too, even in his first taste of starting in the bigs. But f***ing around with him took its toll on the shoulder and he was never the same
Posted

Before he got hurt in Texas, he was lights out as a starter.

Once he got up to the appropriate pitch count, he started 9 games at a 100 pitch count...

54IP 46H 12ER 59K 18BB 2.00ERA 9.8K/9IP 1.18WHIP

After that, he pitching in Texas and "inflamed" his shoulder and was never the same. During that run, he was lights out dominant and the best pitcher on the staff. Over time, had his shoulder actually been ready for the workload, I have no doubt he'd at least been on par with Brandon Morrow or Max Scherzer, guys with lights out fastballs and dominant stuff capable of striking out 10 a night. When he returned from that shoulder injury, he looked afraid to let it loose and that never shook. They f***ed him up completely

I agree. If not for Joba's shoulder, elbow, tricep, oblique and ankle, he could have been a very good pitcher.

The shoulder was the start of it all. Tommy John is recoverable. The ankle isn't the end of a career. But for a pitcher, a shredded shoulder is a real career changer. I am certain there is damage there, even though the MRI doesn't show it. The guy used to hit 100 with regularity. Now, he barely hits 95

Posted
The shoulder injury he got with the Yankees was why he fell to the Yankees in the draft because of injury issues?

No, his shoulder wasn't the question. It was the conditioning and a tricep injury late in his college season.

Posted
No doubt he is injury prone. But he shook off the tricep issue completely. Remember, injuries get amplified big time come the MLB draft. They'll pass on an elite talent if they have even a non-career threatening injury, especially a pitcher. He was dominant through the entirety of the pro levels until that fateful day in Texas. Since then, he hasn't been even close to the same

Back to the mocks...

Clint Frazier is the hot name for the Red Sox. There were 5 new mocks over the last 3 days, and 4 of them have Frazier going to the sox. One had Frazier go #6 and the sox getting Stanek. The sox were linked to so many guys over the past few months, but guys who were expected to fall to them previously, aren't expected to fall anymore. Bryant and Moran are going before the sox pick and Manaea is going to be a late 1st round wild card. I think Frazier is going to be the pick, and he's a hell of a player
