Not one, but two very good pitching options off the market from Cherrington. All for the cost of a homophobic and mediocre starting shortstop and Toronto's #8 prospect.

Hello last place.

Just a crazy trade... Jays gave up some talent but I'd expected the Marlins to aquire at least D'Arnaud. Jays still have a pretty nice farm system intact too.

If this trade happens then the Sox fall a little further behind a division rival. The Jays will be adding two quality arms to their rotation and an all-star SS. It just made the Sox job back to respectibility a lot harder. If all three are healthy the Jays just improved their team a lot.

It is crazy how much the Marlins have cut from their payroll since last year

Johnson -- 14 million

Hanley -- 15 million

Reyes -- 10 million -> 16 million -> 22 million.

Buerhle -- 12 million -> 19 million -> 20 million.

Bell -- 10million

Buck -- 6 million

Infante 4 million

Bonifacio 3+ million (arbitration?)

Not to mention Anibel Sanchez who cost 8 million last year. Crazy crazy money.

Even crazier, it seems like this trade mirrors the Dodgers/Red Sox trade from last August.

Buyer ---- Seller

--> Solid, but non spectacular prospects (De la Rosa & Webster/ Marisnick + Hechavarria + Nicolini)

--> Mediocre starting players meant to fill out the roster (Sands + Loney/Arencibia + Mathis)

This is sure gonna make it that much tougher for the Sox to sell the 'patient approach'...
I don't know what the patient approach means. Does that mean that we just build through the draft? The Red Sox have to get back to competitiveness and respectability. We don't have to be the odds on favorites in Vegas, but they need to get back to respectability fast. The Jays just put some huge room between us. Cherington is just too slow on the trigger. I can't imagine how he didn't get in on some of those players.

Cherington and the FO may have the mindset right now that they just unloaded a bunch of big contracts that were handcuffing them, do we really want to jump right into a new bunch of them? The Jays just took on 150+ million of contracts.

Hopefully this does not take too long, otherwise the same old 2012 offseason movie is coming... unless they want to go on cheap mode next season which would be lamentable for a big market team like the red sox.

Which is less than half of what the Red Sox shed and it would have gone a long way toward fixing what was broke about the team.

Reyes's contract is the only really ridiculous part of the deal, and he was by far the best shortstop available. Buerhle was the bargain of last offseason-- he has had 200+ innings for twelve consecutive years. He's a tank. And Josh Johnson? Score. The Dodgers are probably kicking themselves realizing that this group of players was available.

How do the Florida Marlins....errrr, Miami Marlins still have a baseball team down there?

What a sham they are. They loaded up on contracts for 1 year, they spent taxpayers money to build a stadium for a baseball team that barely exists, then firesale......

MLB should force them to sell that franchise and relocate, tough s*** about the stadium......make it a memorial.

The funny thing is, if the deal was flipped to the sox, it would have completely overhauled and remade the team, with all needs filled. I am shocked the sox werent in on this.

You needed a SS, C, 2 starters and the Jays got just that plus a pretty solid utility guy. I cannot believe Ben couldnt beat that haul the Marlins got

I was against Josh Johnson at the deadline. I am against Jose Reyes, and Ross is better than Buck.

Johnson has made 30 starts twice in his career.

Reyes makes wayyy too much money. That would be Crawford all over again.

Buck sucks.

Buerhle is the only piece of the deal that I would have wanted. 200+ Innings, 12-14 Wins.

There shouldn't be any team in the state of Florida.

Not exactly all needs filled. The Sox still would need 1B and OF additions. We could also use a closer who doesn't end up on the DL after he hurt himself tying his shoes.

Bingo.

What a surprise. A big trade is made that doesn't involve the Red Sox, and the usual suspects start crying.

meh I'm not sure I would have wanted the Sox in on that. Big bold move by Toronto though. Miami can pretty much kiss any high talent FA's wanting to go there. Even if Miami is willing to offer big bucks.

If I was Reyes I would be pissed. Warm latin base community for snow, moose and Canadian bacon...

I don't have the link because I don't use Twitter, but Mike Stanton wrote this last night, "Alright, I'm pissed off!!! Plain & Simple"

All I want for Xmas is a shiny new Mike Stanton in RF :D
