I think Soria is a good pick up for whichever team get's him. If he's healthy and pitches well he can take over for MO next season. Not a bad situation for the Yanks, I expect NY to be all over this.

I think Valverde's value crashed because his collapse in the playoffs. It shouldn't be a surprise because his season had some rocky patches. I wouldn't touch him. I would take a chance on a healthy Soria on a one year deal. Thats what KC did with Broxton last season.

Valverde isnt coming to the Yankees unless it's a cheap 1 yr deal/pillow contract so he can recoup his value.

What I like is the fact that the Yankees are practicing some fiscal responsibility. What I also liked was how they worked in David Phelps, a guy who I think should be in the conversation for 5th starter this yr. I am hoping they sign Hunter to a 1 yr deal. I dont care how much the 1 yr is worth, they need to get under the cap for 2014. This gives them 1 yr to see if their kids can come through. After years of having 1 big name offensive prospect, the Yankees have 3 viable OF prospects who will start the yr in AA, one of them being named the BP top corner OF prospect in all of baseball (Tyler Austin). If things break right and 2 of the trio of Heathcott, Austin, and Williams end up seeing a lot of time in AAA then they might end up letting Grandy walk, resigning Cano and then handing RF to Austin and CF to Williams or Heathcott. They need to get younger, and if in that time they arent a playoff contender then so be it.

I wouldn't mind taking some more risks this year. Maybe gambling on Hafner and Oswalt? They shouldn't cost too much. If Hafner is willing to accept a minor role, like part time DH option unless he gets off to a hot start. I just wish things got rolling a bit faster, like re-signing Mo and Pettitte, and hopefully Martin too.

How do Hafner and Oswalt make sense for the Yankees? They're both coming off awful seasons and significant injuries.

Well I'm not saying sign them and be done with the off season... I'm assuming we re-sign Pettitte, Mo, Martin, Ichiro, chavez... Oswalt could be a nice 5th starter. I'm assuming he's going to get something around $4 million base plus incentives. Hafner could play a good role with the Yankees if he gets hot. Again I'm assuming he's not going to make bank out there or get two year deal offers.

Or you could sign players who will produce similar results on one year deals that are a bit more expensive and won't suck/get injured, like Kuroda and a guy like Thome, who is older, but has outproduced Hafner by the mile and could probably be talked out of retiring.

Oswalt makes little sense. Re-signing Pettitte and Kuroda fills out your rotation and leaves Phelps and Pineda free to move into the rotation should Pineda's health improve or the need arise.

Hafner makes a lot of sense. He's probably due a significant pay cut and his swing in Yankee Stadium would be deadly. Couple that with ARod as his DH platoon partner and you have the makings of a comeback kind of yr. The same could be said for Thome, but his neck issue might not be something he can play through

With Hunter gone, we should be looking to either re-sign Ichiro or find guys who are FA's coming off down yrs. Either that or find a guy like Johnny Gomes who could be a find in RF, especially vs lefties. Or you could do both. And he will likely come cheap on a 1 yr deal

Ludwick would be my first choice, but he is gonna get a 2-3 yr deal and I doubt the Yankees want to tie up those kinds of yr with that salary when they have the kids coming through the pipe. I am sure that come 2014, one of our prospects will be starting in the OF, hell, we might have 2.

I'm assuming the Dodgers will sign Kuroda, in my mind at least.

Yanks are in on Nolasco apparently

And hopefully Logan Morrison, would be a nice buy low option. Re-signing Ichiro is a must now too. OF sets up like Garnder in CF, Granderson in LF, Ichrio in RF. With Morrison seeing a lot of playing time too, assuming he hits.

Rail riders beat out pole smokers, smokin spinners, tranny hookers, and arod's anal beads for SWB nickname in a pretty ferocious contest

I lol'd, might be the funniest thing I've ever seen you write

Sounds like Hal is adamant about getting under $189 mil. It'll be nice to see the kid and elderly show the next few yrs

So what's going on over here in Yankee land? Are they really serious about getting below the threshold? What do you think is the fall back plan is Kuroda heads west? What youngsters are in the pipeline? I'm not up on the Yankees farm system. What happened to those 2 young pitchers?

The Yankees were better armed prior to this season actually. Banuelos was a top prospect before the Yankee brass decided to throw him out there in s*** ass weather, he strained his elbow, it was misdiagnosed and finally just had TJS. So he's out for 2013.

Betances looked like an ace in the making before completely imploding.

We dealt away DJ Mitchell, George Kontos and Hector Noesi.

Our best right now options are David Phelps and Adam Warren. Phelps looked like a big leaguer out there, 4 pitch arsenal that he located, struck out nearly a batter an inning and showed some balls out there without being too afraid of the strike zone. Warren has shown the same thing in the minors, but in his lone big league appearance he was anything but. Both of these guys profile more middle to back end of the rotation, although they do give big innings.

Behind them, we have Brett Marshall, who is better suited near the top of a rotation based on how he finished the yr. He's a guy who can throw his four seamer into the mid to high nineties, but became a sinkerballer after TJS. He couldnt strike anyone out the first half of the yr, then got his slider back and started incorporating his 4 seamer more, and he K'd 59 in the final 59 innings of the season. He starts the yr in AAA, but if he continues to show the improvement he did in season from last yr, he will be an option come mid season.

Another guy who will start in AAA most likely is Mikey O'Brien. He is a guy capable of hitting mid 90s, but locates better at 90-92. He probably profiles more as a reliever, but could be a back end guy with his arsenal should his breaking ball round into form.

Those are the guys who should be in AAA or higher to start the yr. We have a bunch of talented guys who will start the yr in AA or lower with the best talent likely ticketed for A ball or lower (Campos, Hensley, DePaula).

Wait, so the contributions of Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, David Phelps, David Robertson and Joba were insignificant? C'mon man, you're better than that.

Re-upping Kuroda and hopefully Pettitte will hold the fort for one more yr. by then, Marshall, Banuelos, Warren, Phelps et al should be ready to step up

We are talking about top of the rotation pitchers. The $panks go CC, Kuroda and Pettite at the top of the rotation. Nova hit the wall at the end of last season and I don't think the Yanks know what they will get from him. Hughes is probably their number 4 at this point and has enjoyed some success. Joba and Robertson are relief pitchers, and Phelps may get a shot at number 5 if the $panks have injuries. I think Hughes is the closest they have come to recently having a young STARTER come up through the system. Otherwise they have gone outside the organization for established starters.

Hughes would have been your ace last yr, btw. That's not saying much. Hughes is a guy with top of the rotation peripherals and stuff, he just has short stretches a la Buchholz where he is absolutely abhorrent. He is no ace, that's for sure
