The Sox starting pitching next year will not be good enough no matter what they do to support having any sub .250 hitters in the starting lineup. Therefore Lavarnway, Iglesias, Valencia, Loney, Nava, Saltalamachia can not be starters. Maybe you can keep Salty if you can not find another catcher who can do better.

I would keep Iglesias to give him a shot, but I agree that we should take out the rest of the garbage.

Roster cleansing is just 1 day away. So many dead weights.

They didn'y clear it out last year, why would the drop 10-15 players this year?

In all fairness, they did get rid of about 7 players mid season. I think they understand that it is time.

Lavarnway is nothing more than a AAA player at this point, or a backup C. He needs time to develop still, so he should be in AAA. Iglesias is the only one that I really want to start next year. His defense is amazing and if we can add other offensive weapons, then his lack of offense will be a non-issue. Valencia needs to go. We obtained him because Middlebrooks was done for the year. Valencia is outright horrendous. Loney was just a fill-in at 1B because somebody had to replace Gonzalez. I do not really want Loney back next year. I am all for having Gomez stick around as a backup 1B or platoon player at 1B, but I am hoping that we can find a better alternative at 1B (Napoli). Nava needs to go, unless we cannot find a better 4th OF. If he is starting for us next year, then there really is probably no hope for next season. I agree with you on Salty. Ciriaco and Aviles could be decent utility players, especially if they could both learn to play in the OF. I would rather have Ciriaco than Aviles, but if we are stuck with both, I hope neither is more than a utility. Ciriaco adds speed and a spark to this team.

We need to resign Ross and Ortiz. Pedroia is at 2B. I hope Iglesias stays at SS. Middlebrooks is at 3B. Ellsbury is in CF. That means that we have one OF position, 1B, and C that we need to really work on to add some offensive weapons to this offseason. As I have said over and over, I am all for looking at Swisher, Napoli, and Pierzynski if the price is right. Swisher can play in the OF and at 1B. Napoli can play C and 1B. I like the versatility there. Napoli could split time with Pierzynski at C. Swisher and Napoli could split some time at 1B. Swisher could also split some time with the open OF position. If that is the case, we need to get a 4th OF who could be a platoon player. A guy like Sweeney or Nava is not the answer. Kalish might not be either, but I have more confidence in his potential than Nava's or Sweeney's.

If they can get Napoli at least then I think they have the basis to take some risk on Gomez at 1st and Lavs behind the plate.

I really think they will have to come up with a relatively short term solution at SS waiting for Xander to come up. I love Iggy but he just cannot hit....at all. Worse than that, just the sort of play he absolutely has to make he did not make last night. Could have saved them a run and he didn't.

The biggest gamble the Sox might have to make next season unless they do decide to make Iggy the full time SS is Kalish in RF. They may end up having to gamble on his shoulder finally coming around and his hitting with it.

While nobody could have foreseen Reddick having the kind of success he has had in Oakland and there are no guarantees that he would have had that sort of success here, having now seen more of Kalish, It appears to me that this is yet another case of the Sox getting stubborn about a decision and sticking with it to the bitter end....in the this case the decision was Kalish instead of Reddick. Kalish has been injured a ton but that also means he has been polished to a mirror finish in the minors. They may at this point be stuck. They may just have to gamble on Kalish in RF as he is at least a very strong defender in RF, something they do not have without him.

However they never should have been forced to decide anyway. Bringing Bailey with his injury history to the Red Sox was a huge gamble that rightfully blew up in their faces big time.

As for Scutaro, nobody could understand what the hell the Sox were doing with that move anyway. We were all mystified with that one. Scuts seemed like a heck of a value. He finished the year strong and none of what he did looked like an aberration. Another terrible Sox move because it created a hole where one didn't exist. Scuts could have held down SS until you can get Iggy or even possibly Xander up here. Another terrible decision in a long line of terrible decisions. Can't blame Theo for that one.
