Who do you think will have the best success as the Sox closer? Bailey was brought here to close, Melancon closed with the Astros and got the save today, and Aceves has filled in this year. So, who do you think should close?

Bailey. Aceves should be the long late inning reliever. Melancon should be sent packing.

What is Melancons era since all star break?

I voted for Bailey. My only real Valentine complaint was going with Aceves as the closer. Last year he pitched good numbers but always felt a little out of control. Just no room for error as a closer. I felt Padillia or Morales would have been better closer option.

Bailey. Thats why he was brought here. I get the feeling Aceves is gone next year anyway.

Aceves is out the door next year unless he really does a major apology. I don't see it in him. Wouldn't be surprised to see him on the waiver wire tomorrow.

Has to serve the suspension first.

Before today it was 7.00. Before the All Star Break, his ERA was 7.04. He has been consistently very bad.

What can you expect? He came from the Astros.

Bailey IS a closer. That's what he was brought here for. He should be the closer, period.

Valentine should have called Aceves in his office, and told him--"hey, Bailey is ready to close, so he's closing now. Thanks for filling in. here's what we'd like you to do..."

That apparently didn't happen, which tells you something about communication on the Red Sox.

If Aceves is not in next years plan because of his attitude I would try to trade him to get a prospect. He would be a good arm for a contender.

Their pitching sucks, and Aceves is one of the better ones. He's been asked to do everything this year except carry a waterbucket. Not well managed.

You want to keep the good ones.

Melancon disappears. If Bard can't make it back to setup, then Aceves will do. Bailey closes--until the next time he runs into a door and goes on the DL. Aceves fills an important role in mid to late relief or 5th starter.

Forgetting the Bard's failure and assuming a competent starter will be impossible to obtain, I'd move Aceves to the rotation next year.

Bobby is doing exactly what he should be doing with this situation. There is no reason to crown a closer when your team is finishing off a death spiral of a season. If I were him, I would rotate those three through the closers spot for the next 5 weeks and get some info for next season

If you don't give anyone a closer's job, then you don't have to give anyone a closer's money in arbitration. Probably planned that way.

That should make him an All-Star.

To have the 14th worse relief appearance since 1918 counts for something. There's been nearly 600,000 relief appearances in since that time. Boy 14th! To follow up with a 3 game suspension (1st in Red Sox in 20+ year) is icing on cake.

A healthy Bailey if he finishes the season strong should be the Sox closer in 2013. He has track record of being productive in that role.

Besides, Aceves was supposed to be in the rotation this year, and Melancon was supposed to be the setup man. I want Padilla as the setup man now. That eephus is nasty!
