The misunderstanding happened because you misused the term x-type deal. When you use that term you're talking about a contract with extremely similar years/ money attached to the contract you're using as a benchmark. They thought you were referring to a ten year deal for similar money, and rightfully so. They called you out on it, as they should have given Pedroia's age. What you meant was impossible to decipher given the choice of words.

Ya that sums it up :D

If you want to make a comparison in a deal the Sox should use as a bench mark, Kinsler is much closer then Longoria.

He isn't leaving Boston, he's their retort to Jeter. That being said, I see him as your typical little guy, deteriorating a little earlier than most. He probably puts up his final all star caliber year at the age of 32 or so.

He's right though. Or at least what he's saying is a distinct enough possibility that snarking him for it is likely unprofitable. A lot of little guys, when they start seriously declining the bottom just falls out between one season and another. Chone Figgins and David Eckstein both went from "great" to "well, OK I guess" to simply gone within 2-3 years. Granted, both Eckstein and Figgins are more dependent on the speed game than Pedroia, but that body type doesn't hold its peak as well, it's just the truth.

Pedroia had the one season where he lost a lot time and that was due to a broken foot. He has not shown a proclivity to injury from playing hard. The little guy is pretty durable. I'd sign him long term. I'd sign him through age 35. He is as driven as any player that I have seen.

I agree. He's a really special player. Hopefully he will finish his career with the Sox.

He is a special player who gets every ounce out of what a mediocre to minus body will give him. Once that body starts to betray him, he will see a decline in his production. I think he has 3 more All Star caliber seasons and then he'll see a dropoff that will still see him as an above average player for another 2-3 yrs.

I too would like to see him in a Sox uniform to the end. Doesn't mean they have to make that deal now. Pedroia is a gamer. No question what so ever. But to me he seem like a guy that very rarely is 100% and has some sort of ding. He very rarely missed time because of it, because he is a gamer. But he's "dinged" a lot. And I think that has a cumulative effect. He had the thumb last season, foot the year before(this was the only one that cot him games really), I seem to remember one season there was a wrist/elbow/shoulder(one of them, I honestly could be wrong). I'm not selling on Pedey, just voicing why I think they should proceed with caution and not signing him until he's 40 right now.

In baseball, you don't need a great body. A good pair of wrists and forearms to hit, healthy legs and great instincts and you can be good for a long time. Reflexes mean more in baseball than other sports, and they typically last longer than other skills like speed or throwing arm strength.

I don't think it will even be a tough choice for the Sox to make. They don't have to offer Pedey 10 years to get him to age 35. I don't think there is any question that Pedey will be in a Red Sox uniform at least that long.

I think middle infielders who play every day get a lot of dings. Jeter has been dinged up every year.

Bat speed will start dropping and you'll see some wear and tear on that tiny body coming around 33yrs old. You can keep this as a sig bet or whatever, but I see him being his usual .300/.380/.450 line from 2013-2015, a .285/.350/.400 line from 2016-2018 and then an exit from baseball/utility role after that.

Pedroia has said over and over again he wants to retire a Red Sox. If he does not get a career ending injury anytime soon, then I think he will go down as one of the best Red Sox players in history and will be going into the HOF. Of course, he has to perform close to his career averages for that to happen. As long as he is healthy, I think he will be able to. A few more GG's and his case will be really good. He already has an MVP and ROY award as we all know. The best thing abouy him is that he will give us a hometeown discount.

What are people's expectations for Pedey this year? Will injuries continue to pile on, or will he turn back the clock?

I think something like .295/18/70. A good year, but nothing overly special. Good thing he's still great defensively.

.285/17/80/.370OBP, 15 SB's

In the .270-.280 range average wise, 18-20 homeruns and 90 RBIs. I'm going a little high on the RBIs since it looks like he'll be batting third. More people to hit in than normal. Maybe 18 stolen bags.

Just out of curiosity, why .270-.280? He has never hit below .290 in any season he has played since 2007. I am not counting his 2006 season where he only played 30 or so games. Even after playing through an injury last year, he still managed to get his BA up to .290. I think if he is healthy, he is easily a .300 hitter.

Extend this guy now. He's making $6 mil and he's their best player. They are paying a bunch of palookas twice as much. That's baseball.

Yes, let's go right up to the cap today for no reason!

I love Pedroia and he is the heart of the team, but he has had injuries the last few years so I wouldn't be rushing around extending him at a crazy amount of $$$$$. When the current contract is close to the end reward him if he is deserving. He plays the game hard which is what you love about this guy, but his career will be shorten because of that.
