I feel like with where new York is now with injuries and their recent performance that the sox are one big run away from making the race interesting.

The Sox don't need to worry about the division and the WC. They need to worry about winning games. That's the only factor they control.

My understanding of statistics is limited, but aren't securing playoff spots and winning games sort of, I don't know, connected at basically every level?

I thought winning games in order to win the division or Wild Card was kind of the point of playing the games in the first place. I could be wrong though, like I said. It's possible that a shadowy cabal of powerful executives decide who goes to the playoffs from inside a secret meeting hall, and they just play the games to make money and distract the public from a secret buildup towards World War 3.

But you guys would know that better than I.

I think we would be better off if the Yankees help us by beating the teams in front of us.

Just win and you'll pick up games on someone, whether it's the Yankees or a WC team. Just keep winning, that's all they need to concern themselves with for now.

Like User Name said though, if they focus on winning games one at a time then who knows what can happen? Remember what Millar said in 2004? We all know that if this team continues to try and plays up to their collective talent level, they are as good as ANY team in the division.

I'm conflicted in regard to this because you certainly make a very good point.

Yea but people don't post here for the team. If you were in first place your view it would be to keep winning games.

What i mean is that focus on the bigger picture can be lost if you're too worried chasing the division. They need to play with a sense of urgency right now, since they're out of a playoff spot. No need for the obvious sarcasm.

Kevin Millar talks too much.

Oh yeah he does, he can talk the balls off a brass monkey but what he said during the playoffs in 2004 summed up a team wide do or die trying attitude. Kind of what people here have wanted from me, a little anything is possible open your mind attitude.

Kevin Millar could commit cold blooded murder on live tv and I'd still love him.

Isn't the "focus on the bigger picture" winning a playoff spot? If you don't focus on your goal, a goal that you can only achieve by winning games, wouldn't you risk losing that goal by not playing as well? If you ignore the standings and play one game at a time, you risk losing a game, shrugging, and saying "ah, it's just one game". Ten more games like that and suddenly you're looking up at the rest of the division. If you play every game like it is a possible way to jump in the standings (which, of course, it is), you can stay focused on that big picture and always remember that every game you play is important.

Oh, no doubt. The same goes for almost everyone on that team. I'm just saying if he could shut up while he did it, that would be great.

That's hard to do when they are playing each other a lot.

I'm pretty sure that the TropiDumpster in Tampa is designed so that if a ball hits any number of struts in the dome that the entire thing will collapse into a tidy heap of twisted, inbred wreckage and cheap bloody cowbells that can conveniently be pushed into the ocean.

But it's harder to stay in survival mode if you're operating under the impression that you have the possibility of reaching the division. We can agree to disagree here, since in the end, they just need to win.
